Page 8 University Daily Kansan___ Extension Releases Report On Steelworkers' Institute A history development of the steelworkers' institutes at Lawrence and Kansas City is the subject of the latest report in the Extension research publications series. The December report fifth in the series, is by Frank T. Stockton, dean emeritus and director of special projects for the Extension. Since the first Institute in 1947 the curriculum has come to include first year and advanced courses. Subjects are collective bargaining, union organization, legislation and political parties and speech for the first group, and the steward school, group leadership and community relations for the advanced men. One of their significant features has been endorsement by company management, sometimes to the extent of paying all or part of the wages of men attending. Another has been active cooperation by farm groups to further farmer-labor understanding. Dean Stockton points out that no other extension unit of an educational institution has a similar series. Its aim is to provide a history of past experiences in adult education as a guide to future efforts. Currently planned are histories of KU extension work in the school's early years. Histories on activities of Lawrence and Kansas City centers, the Extension library and visual instruction are in the "thinking stages," Dean Stockton said. Catholic Students To Attend Retreat About 80 members of the Newman Club will gather at St. John's Catholic Church at 4:30 p.m. today to receive Pilgrim's blessing before making a retreat at the Benedictine Monastery in Conception, Mo. They will return Sunday night. During the retreat club members will observe strict silence. They will attend lectures, participate in all the religious functions of the monks at the monastery, and visit the Bendictine convent, where the nuns maintain perpetual prayer. Discussions groups, where the retreatants may break silence, will also be held. NATO Grants Available Graduate scholarships, given by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and the Alexander-von Humboldt Foundation, are now available, said J. A. Burzle, professor of German and scholarship adviser. The deadline for applications is Jan. 1. Eight research fellowships are offered for 1956-57 to candidates from NATO member states. Candidates will be selected on the basis of their research projects and their special knowledge and experience. The aim of the fellowships is to encourage study which will give insight into the present needs and future development of the North Atlantic area as a community. University or institute fees, food and room cost, and round-trip travel are covered by the 10-month Alexander-von-Humboldt scholarships for study in Germany. Applicants, who must be under 30, should possess an adequate knowledge of the German language. Nursery Children To Hear Carolers About 40 children who attend the University Nursery School will be waiting in their homes Tuesday for Christmas carolers from child development classes. Carolers will meet at 6:30 p.m. in Fraser to divide into small caroling groups. Mrs. Luella M. Foster, assistant professor of home economics, said 40 students had indicated they would attend. Other interested persons should sign the list on the child development bulletin board in 110 Fraser, she said.
