Dec. 8. 1955 Author Predicts Man's Fate In 'This Fortress World' The possible future of man is described by James Gunn, assistant instructor of English and science fiction author, in his novel, "This Fortress World," which is in the Student Union Book Store. "I don't feel the book is simply a science fiction adventure story," Mr. Gunn said. "I have tried to do other things with it, including making a statement about life itself." "My novel predicts a condition when men have gone in space ships and have settled in other worlds." he said. "The worlds have fallen into primitive conditions because of difficulty in communication, essential to any form of empire. Each planet becomes a fortress." The novel has a meaning on another level, Mr. Gunn said. It applies to the individual who is a fortress and wants to build a wall around himself so the world can't hurt him. The wall seals the person in as well as sealing the rest of the world out," he said. "On the same level the book applies to the hero who needs to communicate, but, because of the wall, he can't," he continued. A reception for Mr. Gunn will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday in the Student Union. Mr. Gunn, with Jack Williamson, wrote another science fiction novel, "Star Bridge," which was published in April. He is the author of more than 40 science fiction stories. Jean Nicolet, the French explorer, believed he had found a new gateway to China when he passed through Michigan's Straits of Mackinac in 1633 and stepped from his canoe garbed in flowing Mandarin robes to impress any wealthy orientals in the area.
