SWITZER The theater and Western Civilization have become controversial topics during the last year and a half, and have brought to public notice the name of Rupert Murrell, assistant professor of sociology and anthropology and director of Western Civilization. He has taken an active part in these controversies. Prof. Murrill has a knowledge of different countries and peoples. He was born of English parents in 1015 in Mexico City, and attended a private American school there. He completed his secondary education in England. He spent a year as a premedical student at St. Thomas' Hospital Medical School in London, across the street from the House of Parliament, before taking a trip to Venezuela. "In medical school I got to the stage where I went about with that great symbol of the medical profession, the stethoscope, peeking from the pocket of my jacket," he said. "During this stage, varying differences of opinion presented themselves, and the medical school and I parted company." Mistaken For Doctor Mistaken For Doctor In Puerto Rico Prof. Murrill once was mistaken for a doctor and nearly got his finger bitten off. "A distraught women hurriedly ushered her squawling child up to me," he said. "She said he had swallowed a half bottle of creosote and wanted me to save his life." "When I put my finger in his mouth in an attempt to make him regurgitate, he—well, the child came out of it better than I did. He had merely swallowed a good portion of a famous American beverage which admittedly has a strong resemblance to creosote." Theatrical Training At McGill At McGill University in Montreal. Canada, Prof. Murrill received his theatrical training. "The procedure there is much as it is here," he said. "The student gets his first acting experience in one act "Workshop" performances, and then graduates to parts in the major productions." Prof. Murrill's next acting experience came after he joined the University staff in 1950. He has appeared in University Theatre productions of "The Importance of Being Earnest," "Right You Are," and "Richard III." "I am sincerely interested in the theater and would like to see KU get a reputation for outstanding work in drama, so people would come here to enroll in it," he said. "Also, I would like to see a permanent Shakespearean festival operating in Lawrence in the summer. Such festivals have been successful elsewhere and I can see no reason why one could not be successful here. . ." B. S. Degree From McGill Prof. Murrill received a B.S. degree in 1940 from McGill University in Montreal. There he also received most of the medical background necessary for his later study of physical anthropology. In 1942 he obtained a high school teacher's diploma from Ontario College of Education, "an experience," he remarked, "from which I have yet to recover." From 1942 to 1944 he was in charge of the school of instruction in the Canadian army at Camp Borden near Toronto. He trained instructors for the Royal Army Service Corps in the handling of gasoline, food, and ammunition. He received a Ph.D. in physical antropology from Columbia University in 1954. The work for the degree took him to Puerto Rico and to the Micronesian Islands of the South Pacific.
