Page 5 Jayhawks Barely Win Over Wichita, 56-55 In a ragged but thrilling basketball game, the Kansas Jayhawkers spoiled Wichita's field house dedication last night by nosing out the Wheatshockers. 56 to 55. A capacity crowd of 10,300 saved Kansas overcome a five-poin Wichita halftime lead to win it second, game of the season. The loss was Wichita's second in a many games. Lew Johnson and Bill Brainard, each with 15 points, paced the Jayhawkers to the comeback victory. Johnson's outstanding rebounding played a major part in the triumph. Sophomores Joe Stevens and Calvin Woodworth, and senior Bob Hodgson led Wichita's scoring. From then on, Coach Phog Allen's cagers maintained a one to five point margin until the final gun. Kansas appeared to have clinched the contest when it led by five points with one minute to play, but the Wheatshockers scored four quick points to cut the final margin to a single point. The spirited Wichita University team extended heavily favored Kansas to the limit and led at the half, 28 to 23. KU came out strong the second half and scored eight straight points to jump into a 31 to 28 lead. During the first half, Kansas in no way resembled the team that manhandled Northwestern so easily Monday. The team was guilty of faulty passing and hit only 18.9 per cent of its field goal attempts. It held an early 3 to 2 lead, but fell behind, several times by nine points. Two late KU baskets cut the Wichita lead to five points at intermission. Marquette Wins 24th Powered by 6-foot, 8-inch Terry Rand, who scored 31 points, the Warriors looked impressive last night as they racked up their second win of this season. 89-75, over Valparaiso. The triumph was a grim warning to San Francisco, which is slated to meet Marquette in the opening round of the DePaul tournament in the Chicago Stadium Dec. 16. The national champs are idle until this clash, which opens their big national tour, but Marquette has two more games that figure as victories. OU Holds Drills For Bowl Trip NORMAN, Okla. (U.P.)—Oklahoma coach Bud Wilkinson said today's second Orange Bowl drill would wind up the week's activity on the practice field. The Sooners held a fast drill of calisthenics, wind sprints and other conditioning exercises yesterday to work off the sluggishness resulting from a 10-day layoff. Band Can't Go No Money In a resolution adopted yesterday, the five-member board which administers county affairs said it has "no desire to contribute to the integration of the races, either socially or educationally." Jones' unbeaten football team faces Compton, Calif., Junior College's unbeaten team with several Negro players in the lineup, in the bowl game next Saturday at Pasadena, Calif. A fund-raising drive was started to send the 110-member Jones College band to Pasadena by bus and the Covington Board had made its contribution pledge Monday.
