The 40-year-old Spartan coach, who didn't get a single vote in last year's balloting, this time rolled up the greatest winning margin in the 21-year history of the poll. A total of 492 members of the American Football Coaches Association took part in the voting and Daugherty received 199 first-place ballots. A distant second was Bud Wilkinson, coach of Oklahoma's Orange Bowl bound Sooners with 54. The award comes at the end of a season that saw Daugherty build a team that had won only three games out of nine the previous year into a formidable machine that won eight of nine and landed in the Rose Bowl.
