Kansas will start the same starting lineup as in the Northwestern game, when it crushed the Wildcats 91-70. Wichita, hard-hit by graduation last season, is rebuilding its team around two veterans, center Bob Hodgson and guard Leo Carney. Hodgson is regarded as one of the best centers in the Missouri Valley. Wichita will start two sophomores against the Jayhawkers, Joe Stevens and Calvin Woodward. Stevens scored 10 points against Utah and Woodward was one of the best rebounders. The University of Kansas Jayhawkers go after their second basketball victory of the season tonight when they face Wichita University of the Missouri Valley Conference. Tipoff is at 8:30 p.m. and the game will be broadcast over the KU sports network at 9:25 Wichita, in the midst of one of its toughest schedules, will be trying for its first victory of the season tonight. In The Shockers' only game, they fell to high-powered Utah, 73 to 51. At halftime, they were down 44 to 17, and although playing better ball in the second half, they could never get back in the game. An interesting sideline of the game is that Wichita Coach Ralph Miller is a pupil of Kansas Coach Forrest C. "Phog" Allen, and played for KU in the last game between the two schools in 1942. In that game, Miller scored 31 points to lead KU over the Shockers, 54-39, then a Kansas scoring record. SAFE AS COFFEE K-S Humbles Tech 89-70 MANHATTAN (U.P.)-Kansas State opened its basketball season before 7,500 fans last night by handing Texas Tech its second loss in two days. 89-70. But the Texans chung tenaciously to the K-State squad and the Big Seven team held only a 40-33 half-time lead. The Wildcats looked outstanding on defense, but couldn't get their high-speed offense rolling against Tech until late in the second half. Sophomore Wildcat center Jack Parr steadied the winners by pumping in 22 points and grabbing 15 in the second. Fischer Fischer had 18, to follow, Parr. Texas Tech's forward Jim Reed hit 18 for the losers. Slamming Sammy Enters Miami Open MIAMI BEACH, Fla. (U.P.)—Sam Snead looked confidently toward the $12,500 Miami Open Golf Tournament today as a chance to pick up a little more "vacation" expense money. No one else was even close when Snead picked up a $500 down payment on his annual winter visit to Florida yesterday by shooting a 6-under-pal 65 to win the La Gorce Pro-Member Tournament. By HARRY ELLIOTT (Daily Kansan Sports Editor) Time magazine, in an article on the fabulous Wilt Chamberlain and Phog Allen, has undoubtedly pulled a boo-boo. The magazine, which usually gets its facts straight, for once didn't quite stick to the correct information. The article says: "The Philadelphia Negro is the main reason that Phog is still coaching. Kansas regents require that state college teachers retire at 70, but once Phog got his hands on the three-story Stilt, he wasted no time talking the regents into letting him stick to his job. I'm not going to miss the chance to coach this kid,' he said. 'He's the greatest basketball player alive today.'" We aren't objecting to the idea expressed. It's a good one, But the Board of Regents might-not take too kindly to this misinformation. They shelved a plea that Phog's tenure be extended last spring and to our knowledge haven't changed their minds yet except to let him finish this season. The article is not completely wrong and tells of how Dr. Allen is training Wilt to use his fingers more sensitively in controlling the ball. It does quote Phog as saying, however, "Twelve-foot baskets? What are you talking about? I've developed amnesia." VI 3-9894 The choice of Pete Elliott for Nebraska football coach has been endorsed by both the athletic director, Bill Orwig, and the chancellor, Clifford M. Hardin. The post was opened by the resignation of Bill Glassford at the end of the season. NU Head Endorses Elliott Dr. Hardin said he hoped that Elliott, Oklahoma backfield coach, would accept the position. He said that Elliott was "an outstanding leader" and that he would give his full support, along with that of the board of regents, to the hiring of Elliott if he chose to accept the job. Don't be a Joe Schmo! Elliott said that he would withhold his decision until after the Oklahoma-Maryland game in the Orange Bowl Jan. 2.
