Page 4 University Daily Kansan Monday, March 29, 1954 Wilkinson, Faurot Are Praised by Mather Although he has never seen Oklahoma play and has seen Missouri play only twice, Coach Charles "Mather" admires both coaches and regards them as two of the finest in the nation. While he has never seen one of Bud Wilkinson's teams play, he has viewed many movies of the Sooners and he saw the Tigers play Ohio State twice and was greatly impressed with their play even though they lost both contests. Coach Mather said "I have seen Wilkinson's Oklahoma teams on film several times, Year-in and year-out I have never seen finer coached teams. I am sure that is the secret of their success." Coach Mather listed three reasons why the Sooners have gone through seven consecutive conference seasons without defeat. They are: 1) Wilkinson was a fine football player himself, and is a fine gentleman. This gives him all of the physical and mental qualities which any coach would like to have. 2) Oklahoma's boys like to play football which gives them the desire to win. 3) Great faking, excellent moving out on count and approach to block, and follow-through, all of which results in consistently wonderful execution. Mather said that, "Certainly Faurot is one of the leading coaches in the nation. I am not alone in this thought. His presence as president of the National Football Coaches' association last year indicates the respect in which he is held by all members of the coaching fraternity." Mather has seen many movies of Faurot's teams, and has carefully studied his book "Secrets of the Split-T." However, this is the extent of Mather's knowledge concerning opponents with whom he will be matching wits for the first time next fall. He did make these observations on the other teams: "Certainly, Iowa State has indicated it is taking a renewed interest in football by increasing scholarships and reducing coaches' administrative problems." On Colorado."I have been told by reputable coaches that Dallas Ward's single-wing is one of the most effective and most difficult to defend against in the country. Colorado has a fine recruiting weapon in their beautiful campus." "Kansas State has strongly indicated it likes Bill Meek and his coaching methods. A lot of persons whose judgment I respect tell me have been 'Coach of the Year' for the job he accomplished last season." "Nebraska could come up with a good team next year because troubles often pull a family closer together than before. I have known Bill Orwig (the new athletic director) for some time. Nebraska is to be congratulated for securing him. He'll be a fine director." Coach Mather said that this is a strong football conference even though Oklahoma has been dominating it in recent years, for every conference needs a outstanding team if for no other reason than to prod the others into trying to reach the standards it has achieved." He said, "I think that the tie-up with the Orange bowl is great. Representing this conference in the Orange bowl is a goal worth striving for and a reward for a good season. Kelley Scores Six In East-WestGame The coach feels that the conference has a wholesome attitude toward scholarships, and it is giving athletes as fine as opportunity as any conference in the country. Al Kelley, the only representative of the Big Seven, scored six points in the annual East-West all-star basketball game Saturday night, to help lead the West team to a 103-95 victory. Bob Leonard, Indiana's high scoring guard, led the West's scoring with 22 points, and Arnold Short, Oklahoma City University standout, scored 19. Bob Pettit, Louisiana State's all-American led the East squad with 20 points. Born, Kelly In KU Top 10 Final KU basketball statistics show that co-captains B. H. Station KANU of the Division of Radio and Television handles the full responsibility of the broadcasting with the cooperating stations joining the network by leased telephone line. These cooperating stations may sell the broadcast to sponsors in their area and it is the same arrangement as used during football and basketball season, with as many as 24 stations having carried the broadcast at one time. Oklahoma A&M won the seventh annual Aggie track meet scoring 78-12 points to defeat Oklahoma, Kansas State, Arkansas, and Wichita. By UNITED PRESS Two of the spring's most spectacul slugging exhibitions enabled Don Lenhart of the Baltimore Orioles to top the Grapefruit league with a fantastic .613 batting average today and rookie Rudy Regalado of the Cleveland Indians to take over the home run leadership with a total of nine. Lenhardt, battling to win a regular job in Baltimore's outfield hit three home runs and a single to drive in seven runs yesterday in leading the Orioles to a 19-14 victory over the Chicago Cubs. The 31-year-old native of St. Louis has hit five home runs and collected 19 hits in 31 trips to the plate this spring. Regalado, who is expected to open the season at first base for the Indians, hit two home runs in one game for the fourth time this spring to supply virtually all Cleveland's offense in a 10-4 loss to the New York Giants. In addition to his nine home runs, Regalado has hit three triples and leads the Indians in batting with a .481 average. Lenhardt's slugging enabled the Orioles to score their 14th victory in 20 games and handed the Cubs their 14th loss in 19 contests. Sam Mele and Vern Stephens also homered for the Orioles while Bill Serena, Ralph Kiner, Christ Kitsos, and Harry Meek hit round trippers for the Cubs. Steady pitching by Johnny Antonelli and rookie Windy McCall enabled the Giants to overcome Regalado's slugging and open up a 7-2 edge in their 23-game spring series with the Indians. Early Wynn, Dave Hoskins, and Bill Wight all were pounded hard in New York's 14-hit assault. The Chicago White Sox defeated the Dodgers, 10-5, in another slugging bee but most of yesterday's other games was marked by capable pitching. Vic Rachi, facing his former teammates for the first time, yielded one run and five hits in five innings as the Cardinals beat the Yankees, 4-2. Raschi, who said the Yankees bench jockeys "called me a lot of pet names," has allowed eight runs and 16 hits in 21 innings this spring. Alex Kellner pitched five-hit ball for six innings and drove in a run with a double to lead the Philadelphia Athletics to a 3-1 triumph over Pittsburgh. Rookie Chris O'Connor hit his wildest catch as Pirates are hot, and now has gone 19 consecutive tries without hitting safety against them. Washington's 22-game winner, Bob Porterfield, yielded only one run in seven innings although the Senators bowed to their Chattanooga farmhands in 3-2 and game-ending Spain spanked performance against Atlanta only to see the Milwaukee Braves lose to the Crackers. 2-1. In other games, the Philadelphia Phillies downed the Cincinnati Redlegs, 6-4, sparked by Earl Torgeson's four hits, and Boston's Leo Kiely and Detroit's Ray Herbert matched one-run pitching for seven innings before the Red Sox came off with a 2-1 triumph. Powerhouse, owned by Llangollen farms, was a 2-1 first choice today as the Cal妮nte future book issued its fourth extension of prices on the Kentucky Derby. Catcher Ray Murray was sold by the Philadelphia Athletics to the Baltimore Orioles today in a straight cash deal. The Minneapolis Lakers clinched the western division championship with an 82-72 victory over the Rochester Royals in a National Basketball association game. SIX-FIVE CAB CO. Olson, Gavilan Title Fight Tops Heavy Week of Boxing New York- (U.P.) This banner week in boxing includes the Bobo Olson-Kid Gavilan classic, two important heavyweight fights, nationally televised lightweight and featherweight scraps, and tuneups by two champions. Hawaiian-born Olson of San Francisco was favored at 9-5 today to keep his 160-pound crown despite the speed and durability of the 147-pound ruler. Promoter Jim Norris expects the 15-rounder to attract a sellout crowd of 21,000 and $350,000. In addition, the fee for national television and radio was $100,000.
