Oread, Woman Editor Given Award For Newspaper Achievement Mrs. Mamie Alexander Boyd of Mankato, associate editor of the Jewell County Record, was honored by Epsilon chapter of Theta Sigma Phi, professional fraternity for women in journalism, at the Annual Matrix Table last night. She was given a citation for outstanding contribution to Kansas journalism. The presentation was made by Mary Betz, journalism senior treasurer of the KU group. Margaret McConnel, personnel manager for women in Time magazine, spoke on "Women in the Background." Miss McConnell's speech dealt with the many women employed by Time, Life, and Fortune magazines. She told of their various tasks and the opportunities for women in the staffs of the three publications. The Topeka alumni chapter and KU's Epsilon chapter of Theta Sigma Phi sponsored the dinner, presided over by Elizabeth Wohlgemuth, journalism junior. A congratulatory telegram from the national president was read. Larry Heil, college sophomore, magician, and Glenna Richards, college freshman, vocalist, entertained the guests. Alice Barling, education freshman, accompanied Miss Richards. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's "Song of Hiawatha" was written in 1855. Twenty-six watercolors, two woodcuts, and four oil paintings by Katherine Cardwell, director of art in Kansas City, Kans., are being exhibited in the Museum of Art. For the past three years, in connection with the high school conference, creative work by a Kansas art teacher has been shown. High School Art Now Being Shown Oliver F. West, college senior, has spent much of the last few weeks designing the deck and compartments of a ship. Student Designs Setting for 'Mister Roberts' West, however, harbors no secret desires to become a nautical architect. The ship he designed will be used as the set of the Kansas City Residence Theater's production of "Mister Roberts." As either actor of technician, West has been around the stages of the University since 1948. Two years during that time were spent in the Army, and then he worked with the Little Theatre of Fort Smith, Ark. He is now the vice president of the University Players, vice president of Tri-O, honorary stage technicians, and stave carpenter for the University Theatre. West's plans are based on Jo Meilziner's set for the New York production of "Mister Roberts." West designed his set to fit the Kansas City Theatre and to use a revolving stage. In addition to backstage work on all University Theatre productions this season, West has appeared in "Caesar and Cleopatra," "Antigone," and "My Partner." University Players' melodrama. In addition to designing the set, West will be technical director. He will be responsible for the construction of the set and all technical aspects. There will really be two sets in one. On one side will be the front of a ship's deck house, and on the reverse side will be a cabin. The cabin will be used in the play as the captain's Mistletoe, the maiden and the crew's quarters. The only changes for cabins will be furniture and wall decorations. West said he faced no technical problems except quick change of scene, which will be facilitated by the revolving stage. The biggest job will be painting the details of the ship's structure. "Mister Roberts" will be presented by the Kansas City Resident Theatre at the Jewish Center for two weeks beginning April 25. University Daily Kansan "Little Spokes Make the Wheels Go Round" is the topic of a Mortar Board panel discussion to be heard at the fifth annual Leadership Day for high school senior girls in the Student Union tomorrow. Members of the panel are; Pat Aylward, college senior; Nancy Landon, college senior; Helen Boring, education senior, and Nancy Gilchrist Alexander, education senior. Miss Martha Peterson, dean of women, will speak on the topic "College Life" at a luncheon. A KI' film, "To the Stars," will be shown Leaders of afternoon discussion groups are: Winifred Meyer, college junior; Budy Luig Tau, education junior, and Miss Mary Peg Hardman, assistant dean of women.
