March 26. 195/ Santee Eyes Mark In Chicago Meet Chicago — (U.P.) — Kansas' Wes Santee can't guarantee a four-minute mile under any circumstances, but his supporters predicted today that he would set a new indoor record for board tracks to tomorrow night in Chicago in the 16th annual Daily News Relays. Santee will get plenty of help in his bid for the new mark. Santee will get plenty of help in his bid for the new mark. His selected competition will be Len Trux, the former Ohio State runner who won the prized Bankers' mile a year ago; Warren Drezutler, the onetime Michigan State star who captured the event two years ago; Lawton Lamb, formerly of Illinois, and Lowell Zellers of Indiana. It will be every man for himself in the 11-lap event, on the springy spruce boards, but Lamb was expected to be the key to determine whether the winner will set a new mark. Lamb, in college, was rated one of the top middle distance men in the country, particularly around 1,000 yards, and it was expected that he would set a blazing fast pace for the first half mile and as far into the third quarter as he can. Then perhaps he could go on to win, no matter what his time would be. But whether he wins or not, he would have Truex, Dreutzler, Zellers and most important Santee, off on a good start toward cracking the indoor mark. Track experts figure that the third quarter is the major problem in turning in a four-minute clocking and that if Saturday's field gets good speed through this stretch then certainly a new relays mark will be, set perhaps a new indoor mark, and less likely a four-minute effort could be turned in. The current relays record is 4:06.4 set by Gil Dodds in 1947, while the indoor mark on boards is 4:05.3, by Dodds in 1948 in New York. Santee's mile run was the feature of the 19-event relays in which other major individual scraps will be the pole vault, high jump, 50-yard dash, 1,000 and 600-yard runs, and 60-yard hard hurdles. Phi Gam Wins Hill Championship. dependent "C" league this year. The Phigs beat the Set-ups two games to one to annex the "A" championship. The Delts won two from AFROTC for the "B" crown and SAE beat Beta I, 2-0, to take the Fraternity "C" and Hill "C" championships. This completes volleyball activity for 1954. The next intramural event will be the swimming meet next Tuesday and Wednesday. Then organization meetings for the other spring sports will be held immediately following spring vacation.
