Page 9 Forensic Club Elects Fischer Its First Woman President The Forensic league elected its first woman president, Jeaneene Fischer, education junior, to head the group for the coming year. Since the league was started in 1946 men have more or less monopolized the leadership, Prof. E. C. Buehler, its founder, said. In the past three years, he continued, Miss Fischer has given the most dependable and significant contributions in leadership. Miss Fischer's interest in speaking originated when she took the leading role in both the junior and senior plays in her high school in Eureka. Since her election into Forensics she has become interested in learning about children so is majoring in speech correction in the School of Education. Her interests are not limited to the speech field, however. Her activities on the campus include being treasurer of YWCA; Greenwood county chairman of Statewide activities; a member of Jay James, the Panhellenic council, the International Relations club, Young Republicans club, the disciplinary committee of the All Student Council, and the rush chairman of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. Other officers of the league are Robert Kennedy, college senior, vice president; Mary Ellen McKibben, education sophomore, secretary; Richard Smith, college sophomore, and Robert Ball, college junior, publicity chairman. The league serves both the University and the community with speakers for calls of help, community and civic drives, clubs, and to promote campus activities. The Intramural speech contest is the league's biggest event of the year. Members of the group do the judging and present the trophies. Newman Club Elects Officers The following officers were elected at a recent meeting of the Newman club: James Kohn, graduate student; president; Paul Malone, engineering freshman, vice president; Eileen Foley, journalism junior, secretary; Dick Butler, engineering freshman, treasurer, and Laurie Lane, fine arts freshman, historian. Chancellor Attends Education Dinner Chancellor and Mrs. Franklin D. Murphy and Dean and Mrs. George B. Smith were guests last night at the education faculty members, wives, and husband's annual dinner and program in the Kansas room of the Union building. The program of audience participation included a dance by Flavia Robertson, education sophomore; Francie Aronhalt education freshman; Joan Leonhart, education sophomore; Edwina Jones, education junior, and Marcia Porter, education sophomore. The dance was directed by Shirley Hughes, physical education instructor. Jay Janes Elect 12 New Members The Jay James pep club has 12 new pledges for the spring semester. They are Judy Crane, Topeka; Lue Edna Diver, Coffeville; Martha Jo Johnson, Topeka; Mary Ann Kaaz, Leavenworth; Janice Skaer, Augusta; Dorothy Ann Smith, El Dorado, and Elvson Sugar Creek, Mo., They are college sophomores.
