Nicholas, assistant professor of biochemistry, has received a 2,500 dollar research grant from Bristol laboratories, Syracuse, N. Y. to continue investigating the role of steroids in human health. $2,500 Grant To Professor Steroids, which are found in all animal tissue, play important parts in the conquest of human disease. However, their roles are complex. "A typical steroid is cholesterol found in many foodstuffs. Another is ergosterol which is found in yeast. When exposed to ultraviolet radiation it gives rise to vitamin D which is used in the prevention and cure of rickets. Still other examples of the steroids are the male and female sex hormones," Dr. Nicholas explained. The new project involves the study of fungi and the biological processes by which fungi build small molecules in synthesizing such steroids as ergosterol. "Such research may lead to the determination of how such hormones are synthesized by tissues in the human body." Dr. Nicholas said. Isolating the substances from fungi which can be used for a more simple chemical synthesis of cortisone is another aspect of the project. This "wonder drug" is now obtained by a difficult and expensive process. Working with Dr. Nicholas on the various aspects of the project will be three graduate students, Robert Hiltibran, Charles Wadkins and Harold Antliff.
