University Daily Kansan Page 5 Kansas Golfers Will Have To Hustle To Be Ready For Opener, April 17 By BOB NOLD Kansan Assistant Sports Editor Poor weather has kept Kansas University golfers practically at a standstill. Coach Bill Winey, first year law student, said they will have to double their efforts in order to be ready for their meet with Omaha university at the Lawrence Country club April 17. Robert Dare, business senior; Gene Rourke, engineering senior, and Neil Lilley, business senior, are the only returning lettermen. Rourke tied for the individual championship of the Big Seven conference last year with Graham Hunt of Kansas State. Dare's clutch moment wedge in 1950 at the Lincoln, Nebraska, Country club gave the Jayhawkers their last conference team championship. Coach Winey said Lilley expects to shave a couple of strokes off last year's medal average. The KU coach said several candidates show promise. Among them Bryan "Ham" Lynch, business officer, whom he describes as the most professional-looking player of them all; Robert Lacy, college sophomore, who is low scorer to date with his 71 over the Lawrence Country club's par 68, nine hole grass green layout; Harlan Hise, college sophomore, who is a bee-line stylist; John Prosser, engineering sophomore, who, according to Coach Winey, combines his talents as a power hitter with a satin touch with the putter. Hustling for positions on the squad but perhaps less known for their fairway feats are James Mears, engineering freshman; Michael Chalfant, college freshman; Peter Rush, college freshman, and James Schmitendorf, engineering freshman. The 1952 Jayhawker schedule is not yet confirmed but it will take Kansas to Manhattan, Columbia, Mo., Lincoln, Neb., Emporia, Topeka, and Norman, Okla. The Big Seven championship tournament will be held in Norman over the University of Oklahoma's new 18 hole grass green golf course. Coach Winey said the course is hailed as befitting one of the national tournaments. He said little is known about the conference golf picture. The results of the match play events have no bearing on the conference title. The title is decided by a 54 hole medal play tournament. Oklahoma university will defend the team title by virtue of last year's 77.4 team media average for 54 holes that was played in wind and rain over the Milburn Country club in Kansas City, Kan. Coach Winey said there is no reason to think that the Jayhawkers will not be within striking distance by the time the Big Seven tournament arrives. He said, however, that at this time of the year, only the potentials are available to deal with, and that, as a rule, the team has to get three of four matches out of the way before any dependable guessing can be done. Kansas university has won the conference title three times and tied once. The wins were in 1926, 1939, and 1950. The tie came in 1947. The 1950 championship was won by one stroke from Oklahoma. Kansas tied for eleventh in the 1950 NCAA championship tournament at Albuquerque, New Mexico. It won recognition through the sparkling play of Dave Dennis and Dick Ashley who took their place in KU golf history with such outstanding players as Bob Busler, Glenn Oatman, Dean Ritchie, and W. R. "Tex" Jones. 'Bo' McMillin Dies Of Heart Attack Baker Ties World 60-Yard Dash Mark With 6.1 Performance At Colorado Bloomington, Ind. — (U.P.)—Alvin "Bo" McMillin, one of the outstanding figures in football in the past quarter of a century, died early today of a heart attack resulting from complications of a long illness. He was 57 years old. Thane Baker, Kansas State's wing-footed sprinter, turned in a blistering 6.1-second performance in the qualifying round of the 60-yard dash in the eleventh annual running of the Colorado university indoor invitational track meet Saturday, to tie the standing world record for the event. Kansas State's Cecil Taylor tied the Colorado fieldhouse and invitational mark in the 60-yard low hurdles with a 6.9-second running. Although the mark is unofficial now, it is expected to be approved by the track and field officials soon. Baker is the Big Seven conference champion in the 60-yard dash and 440-yard dash. And still another Wildcat runner, Dick Powers, turned in a record- shattering performance with a 1:57.1 time in the 880-yard run. Gordon Riddell of Colorado A&M toppled a three-year-old meet pole vault record with a loft of 13 feet, $9 \frac{1}{2}$ inches. Kansas State's Veryl Switzer won the septathlon with a 5,036-points total. No points were awarded in the meet.
