Kansas State historical society Topeka, Ks. 10,000 Attend Early-Morning Rally To Welcome NCAA Cage Champs Movies Of Arrival To Be Televised Daily Kansan By BOB LONGSTAFF More than 10,000 students and townspeople jammed the streets of Lawrence early this morning to turn the University-civic welcoming rally and parade into the largest of its kind ever to be held in the town. The rally and parade, planned by Duggan Scanlan, college senior, William Landess, business junior, and a committee of campus and civic leaders, honored the Kansas basketball team, victorious in the NCAA championship tournament. Movies taken at the rally will be shown on WDAF-TV today at 6:10 and 11 p.m. On campus the rally got off to an early start as gaily painted cars appeared about 8 p.m. honking their horns. However, the downtown rally was late because the team was delayed on its trip. The plane arrived in Kansas City about 12:05 a.m. The landing field was lighted brightly by the three-bulb photography lamps used by movie cameramen. The arrival of the team in Kansas City was punctured with the "Pop" of flash bulbs and the grind of movie cameras. An impromptu rally of about 50 KU students was held in the lobby of the Kansas City Municipal airport. It was led by newly elected cheerleader, Joseph Montaleone, college sophomore. Team members were tired, but in good spirits when they arrived and were mobbed by autograph seekers. The team was transported to Lawrence by the University of Kansas bus. The bus flourished banners on the sides stating, "NCAA Champs," and "On to Helsinki," and was decorated with red and blue streamers. On the rear of the bus was the inscription, "Phog's Dream Team." About 50 cars followed the bus into Lawrence forming nearly a mile-long caravan. Friday, March 28, 1952 A dance attended by about 500 students in Hoch auditorium helped overcome the hours of delay before the team arrived at 1:40 a.m. Chancellor Franklin D. Murphy acted as master of ceremonies at the 11th and Massachusetts streets rally. Paul R. Shanahan, secretary of state representing the governor, welcomed the "greatest team in the history of this state." He said that Kansas winning the NCAA championship showed "true pioneer spirit" and was a "jewel in Phog Allen's crown." James Logan, president of the All Student Council, read a telegram he had received Thursday from Don Biggs, president of the Kansas State Student council. It stated, "On behalf of the Kansas State student body congratulations to KU team, coaches and students upon winning NCAA." Coach Forrest C. "Phog" Allen said the team members were planning to stay at the Muehlebach hotel to rest before Saturday's game, but when they heard of the rally they wanted to come back. Since the team members had missed so many days of classes, the return to school was another incentive to come back, he added. More than 200 persons were on the city fire truck that carried the basketball team. Three Fire Helmets Taken During Rally Fire Chief Paul Ingels reported that three red firemen's helmets were taken during last night's hilarity. --- He asked that the persons who took them return them to the fire department. The photograph was taken early today on the chartered bus bringing the basketball team from Kansas City. The team, scheduled to arrive in Lawrence at 9:30 p.m., was delayed until 1:40 a.m. when a thick fog held up the Jayhawkers' plane in Seattle.—Kansan photo by Jack Long. ASC Creates $100 Fund For Cheerleaders' Trips The All Student Council amended its constitution Thursday night to set up a fund of $100 to pay for expenses of cheerleaders to attend basketball games away from home. The Jayhawkers' opponents there would be the winner of the St. John's-LaSalle game. Snyder To Give Recital Sunday Paul Snyder, associate professor of piano, will give a recital in Strong auditorium at 4 p.m. Sunday Schny. His program will include Sonata in C Major, K. 330 (Mozart); Sainta, Opus 81A (Beethoven), and four Impromptus, Opus 142 (Schubert). The public is invited to attend this recital. Those urging acceptance of the amendment argued that such a provision would serve to make cheerleading a more desirable activity to students on the campus. Donovan Hull, former cheerleader, said more students would be tempted to try out for the cheerleader squad with this added inducement. Another amendment passed requires that the chairman of the advisory board of the Jayhawker publicize that any student interested in a publication position may present his own nomination a month before nominees are chosen. This nomination would be presented to the advisory board. In addition, the editor and business manager of the Jayawaker will submit to the board lists of names containing not less than three candidates for each office. The Council corrected a ruling of the elections committee concerning primary elections to be held Wednesday. April 2. The primaries of both parties, FACTS and Pachacamac, must be held at the same locations. The committee had set up the primary voting booths at separate locations earlier in the week. The Council prohibited the FACTS party from selling party membership cards at the primary voting booths. Pachacamac was instructed by the Council to furnish party members identification cards for voting in the primaries.
