"The back pressure forces active expiration and the arm lift active inspiration," he said, explaining the new method. The Chicago researchers worked not only on normal persons, but on animals, persons actually needing artificial respiration, newly dead bodies and volunteer medical students drugged with curare, he said. "The prone pressure method depended on the elasticity of the human chest," Mr. Emery said, adding that while this "works fine on normal persons, those actually near point of death no longer have this chest elasticity.
