The reduced waiting period represents a decided change from earlier policies, officials said. Because the backlog of accepted persons was large earlier, the delay between acceptance and assignment was as much as 10 or 12 months. Reasonably quick entry into cadet observer classes also is forecast for men now qualifying. There are eight pilot classes a year. Some 700 airmen are earmarked for the class beginning Jan. 16 and slightly over this number will begin training in the following class, March 4. As of this week, however, there are practically no accepted airmen on hand for the April 17 class which has a quota of over 750 airmen. Other classes scheduled for next year begin May 29, July 17, Aug. 22, Oct. 2 and Nov. 16. Any student interested should contact the US Army and US Air Force recruiting station at 609 Massachusetts or phone 575.
