PAGE FOUR UNIVERSITY DAILY KANSAN, LAWRENCE, KANSAS FRIDAY, APRIL 27, 1951 Chances At Drake Depend Largely On Semper Herb Semper, the iron-legged redhead who has wheelhorsed Kansas to three distance relay triumphs this spring, will shoulder his stoutest load of the season today and Saturday on the Jayhawkers' 12-man contingent in the 42nd Drake Relays at Des Moines. Semper will not only anchor the K.U. distance medley and four-mile bids as usual, but will go after individual glory in the open two-mile. If other competitors he the same Spartan pattern, the latter event will be loaded. A possible field could include Michigan's Don McEwen, who won the N.C.A.A. two-mile title as a sophomore last year; Warren Druetzel of Michigan State, who trailed Semper home second in the N.C.A.A. cross-country grind last November; Missouri's defending champion, Bill McGuire, and his stablemate, Bob Fox; Jim Urquail, Wisconsin; Dewey Johnson, Drake; Javier Montez, Texas Western, and Cash Powell of Miami. McEwen ran 9:01.9 in winning the nationals last June, and has continued to grind out one foe-killing race after another throughout this season. He came back with a 9:19.6 performance last Saturday at Los Angeles in a triangular meet after spinning the lowest mile of his career in 4:11.3, to win both races. Druetzler, who matched strides with Semper in the prep ranks, owns the Spartan record of 9:09.9. He finished fourth in the N.C.A.A. last year in 19:7.0, .02.6 behind Semper's third place finish. Coming back after missing a year due to an injury, Urquart finished third in the Big Ten indoor two-mile and has gotten as low as 9:26.0 this year. McGuire and Fox astounded a snow-banked gallery at Drake last year with a 1-2 finish in this race. McGuire turned in one of his best all-time performances by slogging home in the record time of 9:16.7. This figure, however, will be seriously threatened if the above standouts choose to enter. Semper is scheduled to come back two hours later in the four-mile The defending champion Jayhawkers will be no better than a third-ranking favorite in this event with Washington State and Michigan State both aiming at the meet record of 17:29.6. McEwen will run the cleanup carry for the Spartans, but the Cougars boast a terrific 1-2 in Bill Parnell, British Empire and Canadian mile king, who has done 41:1.0 and Clem Eischen, a 1948 Olympic teamer, who has sailed 41:2.5. KU's first three runners, Dave Breedental, Cliff Abel and Keith Palmquist, will be obliged to turn in their best individual performances of the spring if Semper is to gain anything resembling an even touch-off. The Jayhawkers won without trouble at their own Relays April 21 in 17:49.8. 6 Members Of'47 Orange Bowl Team Added To Alumni Football Roster By BOB NELSON Daily Kansan Assistant Sports Editor Eleven more graduates, including six members of the 1947 K.U. Orange Bowl eleven, have signed up for the Varsity-Alumni football game in Memorial stadium, Saturday, May 5, J. V. Sikes, head Javhawker football coach, announced this morning. These 11 former K.U. footballers bring to 36 the number of Alumni who have accepted Coach Sikes' invitation to play his Varsity team. This game will be the feature attraction of a huge All-Sports Weekend, which also features a Varsity-Alumni basketball game in Hoch auditorium Friday night. The Orange bowl quintet includes Frank Pattee, one of the finest all-around backs in K.U. annals; Hoyt Baker, another good all-around fullback; Cliff McDonald and Charlie Moffett, halfbacks; Ken "Red" Morrow, quarterback, and Ed Lee, tackle. Carl Ellis, regular guard-tackle in 1948 and 1949; Howard Fischer, regular center with the 1946 Big Seven co-champions; Bob Hagen, a three-letterman in the early '40's at end and blocking back; Henry Lamping, two-letterman halfback under Coach Sikos, and Floyd Temple, a fullback letterman in 1949, complete the new Alumni roster. Coach Sikes has appointed Wayne Replogle, his end coach and oldest from point of Mt. Oread coaching service, and Dan Edwards, spring practice assistant from Georgia, as Alumni coaches. Coach Replogle has called an organized practice session for the Old-Men Saturday morning. They are expected to report their weight, physical condition, and take the field for a few laps and a short scrimmage session. "We'll issue tentative position alignments for offense and defense," the Ripper said this morning, "and probably attempt to get in some 'head-knocking' along with plenty of wind sprints." Patttee, now in the ice and frozen foods business at Excelsior Springs, Mo., played on the 1945, '46, '47, and '48 teams. He played backlift in '46 and '47 and halfback in 1948 until sidelined with an injury in the George Washington game. On the Orange bowl team in 1947, Pattee combined his efforts with Forrest Griffith to give Kansas one of the most powerful one-two punches the conference has ever seen. Baker is head football coach at Paola High school. He lettered in 1942, '46, and '47 at fullback. His greatest game was probably against Missouri in 1946 as K.U. downed the Tigers, 20 to 19. He helped Kansas control the ball through the final seven minutes with his great line-bucking play. McDonald, a Lawrence buseinse man, played on the 1946-47-48-49 Jayhawker teams, lettering the final three years. This lefthander was noted for his pass receiving and better than average secondary defense play. A tour-year *afterburn* in 1934, 43, 47, and 48. Moffett is best remembered for one incarnation against Oklahoma A. & M. here in 1948 that gave Kansas a 13 to 7 victory. He is now employed at Boeing Aircraft company in Wichita and pitches semi-per baseball with his company's team. A reserve quarterback on the 1946-47-48-49 teams Morrow will divide signal-calling chores with Tom Scott. He lettered his final year and was regarded as one of the best signal callers and ball handlers on the '49 club. "Red" coached football at Peabody (Kan.) High school last year before entering the Army. Morrow will use a short furlough to play in the game. He is stationed at Camp Atterbury (Ind.) with an infantry heavy weapons company. He catches for his regiment's baseball team and is reported to be in excellent playing condition. MORROW McDONALD Another high school football coach, Fischer, will share the center duties with Bob Drumm and Don Pierce. Lee, presently enrolled in the K.U. Law School, lettered as a tackle in 1947 and 1948. He played on the 1946-47-48-49 teams. His best years were '47 and '48. He started as regular left tackle in 1948. Injuries kept him on the sidelines most of the 1949 season. Fischer was the regular center on Coach George Sauer's 1946 co-championship Jayhawker club as a freshman. He also played on the 1948 and 1949 teams. Fischer is now coaching at Medicine Lodge (Kan.) High school. Ellis is in his first year as head football coach at Ellis (Kan.) High school. He lettered as a tackle in 1948 and as a guard in 1949. His fine defensive work helped K.U. to a 7-3 record in Coach Sikes' first year at Kansas. Ellis' great goal-line play against Nebraska helped K.U. to a 27 to 13 victory at Lincoln in 1949 Hagen now a Lawrence businessman, lettered as a pre-war blocking back and end on Gwinn Henry's 1940 and 1941 teams. He was also a member of the 1946 team. Temple, a great little defensive back, lettered at fullback in 1949. He is now assistant football coach to Baker at Paola. He was noted for his speed and sure-fire tackling on kickoffs and liked his football "the rougher-the better." Intramural Round-Up Due to the fact that the Daily Kansan sports staff is unable to cover each of the intramural softball games, we are requesting the team managers to turn in a short resume of each of his team's games. The stories should be as short as possible, and yet all highlights should be covered. We will gladly print all line scores and batteries if at all possible. Please check spelling and include first names. All copy must be in the Kansan newsroom by 9 p.m. the day of the game. The following day will be too late for publication.
