THURSDAY, APRIL 26, 1951 UNIVERSITY DAILY KANSAN, LAWRENCE, KANSAS PAGE ELEVEN Palomar's Big-Eye Telescope Is Used In Atomic Research Washington (U.P.)—The "big eye" telescope atop Palomar mountain in Southern California was pictured today as an important tool for scientists in their attempts to match solar atomic energy on earth. It is such solar atomic energy that the scientists are attempting to duplicate in the production of a hydrogen bomb. The new possible role of the 200-inch Hale telescope, largest in the world and an "eye" that can look 1,000,000,000 light years into space, was reported by Dr. Ira S. Bowen, director of the Mount Wilson and Palomar observatories, Passadena, Calif. Bowen said the "question of chemical composition of stars and other astronomical objects is becoming of increasing importance because of recent advances in nuclear physics." "We already know," he said, "that the energy radiated by the sun and most of the stars comes from the transformation of hydrogen into helium in their very hot cores. Abundance determinations therefore provide checks on the reality of various mechanisms of this type and yield information as to the amount of fuel remaining to keep these stellar fires burning." Bowen said that up to the creation of the 200-inch telescope there was no "tool" available to make a comprehensive study of the stars in action. He reported that the "big eye" already had been trained on the ratified clouds of gas surrounding hot stars, and that spectographs of the clouds are now "being used for the study of the chemical composition of the bases and for an analysis of the internal motions of the gaseous envelopes." The importance of the work with the 200-inch telescope in the study of the action of the stars can be linked with the work of H-bomb scientists, because in the exploding of a hydrogen bomb—the transmutation of hydrogen into helium—the action of the sun and stars actually What's In a Name Coalville, Utah (U.P.)—Ellen Copley has an unusual hobby. Bowen estimated that the life of the "big eye," as a research tool, will continue for "50 to 100 years to come." History Teachers To Meet Friday American Cancer Society Grants $18,000 To Medical Center's Oncology Department An $18,000 scholarship grant has been awarded to the department of oncology of the University of Kansas Medical School, by the American Cancer society. The department of oncology was organized in April 1948 to establish a cancer research program and to improve cancer instruction to medical students and staff. Dr. Robert E. Stowell is chairman of the department. Three principal research programs are in progress. The scholarship is one of five granted by the society for use over a three year period. Oncology is the study of tumors. The first of these is a coordinated research program concerned with (a) the study of chemical, physical, and structural properties of cells under different conditions of normal and abnormal growth, including cancer; (b) the effects of ionizing radiation upon cells, and (c) the critical evaluation and development of better methods of studying cells. The meeting will open at 8 p.m. Friday for a paper on "Greece Under Nazi Occupation and the Greek Underground" by G. Georgiades Arnakis of Kansas City, Mo. Saturday's program will be research papers presented by teachers of history in Kansas colleges and universities. The third is a tumor registry and follow-up system for the KU. Medical Center that has been established to provide basic data on cancer cases for clinical research. A second program is concerned with the evaluation of proposed diagnoses for cancer blood tests and a study of blood proteins. NOW ENDS SAT.
