PAGE EIGHT UNIVERSITY DAILY KANSAN, LAWRENCE, KANSAS THURSDAY, APRIL 26, 1951 By BOB NELSON Daily Kansan Assistant Sports Editor If you think the Alumni football team isn't serious about winning its game with Coach J. V. Sikes' Varsity footballers on May 5, you'd better take note of what Head Alumni Coach Wayne Replogle has to say concerning the clash. "We're going to try and win," Coach Replogle said Wednesday afternoon while going over his offensive strategy. "All Alumni players are being sent out the plays we intend to use plus a strict training schedule which we hope they'll abide by," he added. "We expect to use a little different coaching system against the Varsity. Playing coaches will be Don Fambrough, line coach; Ray Evans, backfield coach, and Otto Schnellbacher, end coach. In fact, I expect we'll have as many as 11 playing coaches on the field at numerous times. The biggest job I'll have coaching from the side-lines will probably be to keep 11 playing coaches on the field," Replogle said. "We'll use the conference system (conference in the huddle) along with the Sikes system which most of the players are familiar with. But there's one thing for sure, we're really out to win. "Old Jayhawker football players never die, they just fade away," Replogle concluded, as he stopped to talk with an Alumni player about his conditioning program. Coach Sikes also thinks the Old Grads will give his club a good game. "They've got too many old experienced heads for our inexperienced team," K.U.'s head football coach will tell you. "In Dick Tomlinson, Don Ettinger, Otto Schnellbacher, and Forrest Griffith, the Alumni will have some of the best professional football players in the business. And the Old-Timers will have such players off last year's club as Mike McCormack, Wade Stinson, John Amberg, Lyn Smith, Bob Talkington, S. P. Garnett, and others that are still in pretty fair condition." Coach Sikes said. "Even though we'll probably get beat, I think the Alumni football game and the All Sports Weekend is a mighty fine thing. It gives all the old K-men an opportunity to get together again," Sikes concluded. Golfers Meet Missouri Here Friday; Aim For Loop Finals On May 18-19 The University golf team will meet Missouri Friday in its second home match of the season. The Jayhawks have a 2-1-1 record so far this season, including wins over Washburn and Omaha, a tie with Kansas State, and a loss to Nebraska. Coach Bill Winey invited all interested students to attend the meet. scheduled at 2 p.m. on the Lawrence country club course, which is located northwest of Lawrence on highway 40. The KU. golfers are in the midst of a ten match schedule, including the trip to Lincoln and Omaha and future trips to Ames, Columbia, Manhattan, and Kansas City. The schedule calls for 234 holes of competitive golf, all but 54 of which is play match. The selection of a four-man team has been complicated by the general evenness of play among squad members. Gourke Rourke is the team's power hitter, Bob Dare relies on a sharp putting eye, Jim Houghton specializes in his unorthodox style, and Dann Everett is the "mystery man" of the team. These four golfers will enter the fray against the Titers. According to Coach Winey, "Everett looks like Hogan from the tee, is still impressive with the long irons, but collapses with the chips. I expect he'll hone his short game in time for the title try in Kansas City on May 18 and 19." The nine-man golf squad is made up of the following men: Gene Rourke and Bob Dare, the only two lettermen returning from 1950, and Jim Houghton, Dennis Everett, Chuck O'Neal, Neil Lilley, Don Stickrod, Gene Riling, and Jim Thompson. The medal average of the team is 75.75 based on the par 68 Lawrence course. KU. will be defending their team title in the conference match at Kansas City, and Nebraska's Joe Gifford will be out to repeat in the individual medal honors. The Cornhuskers figure strong in the team title outcome, but the individual title is not nearly so predictable. Dick Ashley was the last K.U golfer to win the individual honors. He did this in 1949.
