Banquet speaking dates and other spring sports will interfere with the practice schedule, but Gardner hopes to be able to work in at least 12 or 13 days of drill during the three weeks. Only members of this year's freshman team are participating in the spring workout. Varsity underclassmen all are engaged in other spring sports and won't be available. Graduating from "The Team to Remember" are regulars Jack Stone, Ernie Barrett, Ed Head, and Lew Hitch. Gardner is considering an alumni game to wind up the spring work-out, but no arrangements have yet been made. "I really won't need the varsity." Gardner explains, "although it would help if they were able to work with the new boys. Our regular schedule kept me so busy this season that I know very little about our freshman team. This spring workout will give me a chance to become better acquainted with each one's capabilities and see just who is varsity material. Freshmen who are working out include; Jesse Prisock, Emporia; Don Laketa, Lemont, Ill.; Jack Carby, Kansas City; Ed Gudsonder, Bloomfield, Conn.; Stane Stauffer, Salina; Frank Blum, Joliet, Ill.; Jim Shirey, Parsons; Arnold Droge, Milan, Ind.; Bick Kohl. Hasting on Hudson, N.Y.; Gene Wilson, Anderson, Ind.; Ron Peterson, Robbinsdale, Minn.; Kim Jyle, Manhattan; Sidney Messer, Kansas City; Don McQuillan, Lansing; Norman Brandeberry, Russell; Kenneth Nicholson, Oxford; Bill Mohr, Masphep, N.Y.; John Hurtig, Courtland; Bob Smith, Hope; and Bob DeNoon, Olathe. The largest freshman group in school history was kept on the squad this year because of the draft threat. Normally the squad is cut to about 12, but 20 frosh are working with Gardner this spring. After coaching the Wichita East High school to its first AA title since 1925, Miller was named Wednesday to the head basketball coaching position at the University of Wichita. It was the first step in complete reorganization of W.U.'s athletic department. A native of Chanute, Miller was an outstanding high school performer in his home town. At K.U. he earned all-Big Seven honors in 1940 and '42 and was a member of the Jayhawk's western N.C.A.A. championship team in 1940. He was a basketball forward and a football halfback in 1938, '39, and '41. Graduating in 1942, he played professional football briefly with the Wichita Aero Commanders. When Emmett Breen moved to K-State's coaching staff, Miller replaced him as East High basketball coach in March,'48. His East High teams have won 67 games and lost 17 in the last three seasons, ranking second in the Arkansas valley and in the state in 1948-49; tying Wellington for second in the valley and finishing third in state rankings the next year; tying Newton for first in the valley and winning the state AA title in the season just ended. This latter team racked up a 26-3 record, winning their last 22 in a row. Miller's wife, the former Emily Jean Milan, graduated from K.U. in 1942. This state championship club placed three men on the allstate tournament team. Cards' Poholsky Hurls 2-Hit Shutout Over Pirates New York (U.P.)—They said the Cardinals were all washed up and that their once-great farm system was producing no good kid ball players, but a 20-year-old pitcher named Ted Poholsky made it all seem like idle talk today. He retired the last 19 men to face him and he didn't yield a hit after the third inning. He gave up only two bases on balls and not a runner got to third, Enos Slaughter homered for the Cardinals, who picked up only six hits off Chambers but made efficient use of them. The Cardinals were in first place ahead of all the other hot clubs which were rated higher by the experts, and it was Poholsky who put them there with a brilliant two-hit, 4 to 0 shutout over the Pittsburgh Pirates. The victory enabled the Cards to move on top ahead of the Dodgers, who suffered a 6 to 5 defeat to the Boston Braves in Brooklyn on Sam Jethrote's one-on-base homer in the ninth. The Phillies won their third straight, 2 to 1, from the Giants, who lost their seventh straight, and the Reds edged the Cubs, 4 to 3, on three homers. Jethre smashed his four homer to give the Braves their victory and the odd game of the series of three. The Dodgers had gone in front, 5 to 4, in the eighth when Jackie Robinson scored before touching home plate. He was awarded the run when Walker Cooper was charged with an error for interference. In the American League the Yankees advanced on the idle pace-setting Indians and second-place Senators by blanking the Athletics, 4 to 0, while the Browns came back to defeat the White Sox, 7 to 4, after losing the opener of a double-header, 8 to 6. Cooper also homered for Boston while Gil Hodges hit a homer for Brooklyn. Rookie Lefty Chet Nichols' cool relief hurling in the ninth saved the victory for Vern Bickford, his second in a row. Big Don Newcombe, hit hard for three innings, retired with a sore shoulder and may be out for a turn, which could complicate things for the pitcher-sparse Dodgers. Lefty Ken Heintzelman pitched another crafty game to give the Philles their triumph over the Giants. He gave up eight hits. A double by Eddie Waitkus and a single by Richie Ashburn gave the Phills their first run and they got the winning tally in the fourth when Del Ennis singled and Granny Hammer doubled.
