1951 WEDNESDAY, APRIL 25.1951 UNIVERSITY DAILY KANSAN, LAWRENCE, KANSAS PAGE FIVE Along the JAYHAWKER trail By ALAN MARSHALL Daily Kansan Sports Editor Recent sports pages have been filled with the feats of Don Cooper and Don Laz, the third and fourth men ever to clear the 15 foot pole vault mark. Both of them turned the trick April 21, Cooper at the Kansas Relays and Laz at a triangular meet in Los Angeles. Track fans at Des Moines will witness a meeting of these two Saturday at the Drake Relays. It should be a battle royal and quite conceivably both men will top the 15 foot ceiling in the same meet, something never before witnessed in the cinder games. Back in the late 30's Ganslen was a famous pole vaulter from Columbia. He was known all over the nation as one of the best and in 1939 he proved it by copping the N.C.A.A. vaulting title at 14 feet 5 inches. Following his college career he went to Illinois to lend a hand—Laz testifies to his ability. There's quite an interesting story behind Cooper's sudden rise to national prominence. Long a contender, but seldom a champion, the bespectacled Nebraska ace has made quite an advance in the last couple of months. And he owes it to Laz and a fellow by the name of Dick Ganslen, now an assistant track coach. Both are at Illinois. Most of you have already heard of Laz's part in the affair—how he gave Cooper a suggestion that improved his efficiency. But Ganslen hasn't been given much credit. It seems that it was Ganslen who picked out Cooper's difficulty. We got the story straight from Dutch Lonborg, K.U. athletic director, who said he heard it straight from Cooper. Anyway, the story itself seems to be true. Cooper entered the Purdue Indoor Relays this year and there it was that Ganslen saw him in action. The ex-Lion ace noticed that Cooper handled the pole in his left hand just before the take-off in such a way that the Nebraskan wasn't taking full advantage of his speedy approach. Advice was offered by both Ganslen and Laz, Cooper took full advantage of it, and the newspapers will tell you the rest. Whoever gets the credit, Laz or Ganslen or both, the story ranks high when it comes to measuring sportsmanship. We recall the time Warren Druetzler of Michigan State saw Herb Semper, ace Kansas distance runner, start to take a wrong turn in the snow-covered national N.C.A.A. four-mile cross-country run this year. Druetzler shouted to Herb the correct way and thus enabled the head to continue his winning way. Druetzler, who holds the course record at East Lansing, finished seven seconds behind. Prepare Site For Golf Meet Manhattan (U.P.)-The Manhattan country club, one of Kansas' finest 18-hole golf courses, is being spruced up this spring for the playing of the 41st annual Kansas amateur golf tournament here the week of June 25th. Defending champion Dave Dennis of Independence, along with several hundred other Kansas golfers, is expected to have trouble with the trick lay-out of the Manhattan course. Sprouting new rolling greens installed only two years ago, plus numerous tree hazards, the course offers a stiff test for Kansas amateurs. This year's state tourney gets underway with registration and qualifying rounds June 25. First round match play will start June 27. Joseph W. Menzie of Manhattan, secretary of the Kansas amateur golf association, reports that 25 of the state's golf clubs have already pledged their support of this year's tournament. A feature of the annual K.A.G.A. is the pro-amateur competition in which outstanding Kansas professionals pair off with amateurs in 18 holes of medal play. The "pro-am" event of this year's tourney will be June 25. In addition to the 64-place championship flight, Menzie explained that there will be three other flights of 32 berths each, giving golfers 160 tournament targets to shoot for in qualifying rounds. The victory leaves the netmen defeated in four games this season and marks them as a definite contender for the Big Seven title. Southpaw Charley Crawford, No. 1 man on the K.U. team, won the first match of the day with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Roger Coad. Crawford turned in one of his best games of the season in stopping Coad, a veteran in conference play. Bob Swartzell, playing in the No. 2 spot, won the first of his matches with Chris Williams on a 6-2 count, but Williams fought back to win the last pair, 6-2, 6-3. It was Swartzell's first defeat in four games this season. Jack Ransom, who played in the No.3 spot for the first time this season, took a tight battle from Don Upson, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. The speedy Upson is well known to K.U. fans as a member of K-State's championship basketball team this winter. so easy. McFarland fought to a duce before dropping the final game 8-6. Bill Thompson had just as much trouble in downing Don Harris 4-6, 6-4, 6-4. K. U.'s No. 4 man, scrappy John Freiburger, took the first game of his match with Dave McFarlane on a 6-1 count. But the next one wasn't Thompson's victory gave Kansas a 4 to 1 lead as the teams moved into the doubles matches. Crawford and Swartzell opposed Coad and Williams in the first of the two doubles matches. The Wildet team, rated last year as one of the best two teams in the Big Seyen, was no match for the fighting Jayhawks, who took a surprisingly easy and well deserved 6-3, 6-4 victory. With the match already decided, Coach Glen Tongier used a reserve team for the second doubles match. Hal Titus, intramural champion in tennis singles, teamed with Rich Mercer to meet the Wildcat entry of McFarland and Harris. The Kansans New York (U.P.)—The Alamo has gone down in history as a hallowed shrine where Americans fought courageously almost to the last man, but one got out—and the New York football Giants are giving thanks today. OnlyOneMan EscapedFromThe Alamo But The Giants Give Thanks For Him Just before Santa Ana's horde overwhelmed the gallant garrison, Col. William Travis sent a messenger to the convention which then was organizing the Texas republic with the stirring message: "God and Texas! Victory or death!" The man who made if through the lines was John W. "El Colorado" Smith. If he hadn't, then his great, great-grandson might never have had the opportunity to make it through a bunch of other lines. But El Colorado made it. And so did his descendant—Kyle "Killer" Rote, who came naturally by his gridiron line-cracking. The killer, a modest, shy youngster, is much like his famed ancestor. El Colorado was a huge, red-headed man with a friendly smile. That's Kyle, the pride of the S.M.U. Mustangs and just about everybody's All-American, although the 22-year-old Kyle's hair is a light brown with just a trace of that heritage red. But Kyle did his running, too, as any football fan—and all his rivals—will tell you. While at Thomas Jefferson High school in his native San Antonio, where El Colorado, after his famous ride, became a five-time mayor, Kyle was named the most valuable high school football player in Texas. That might go over your head unless you've ever made a journey across the breathless breadth of the Lone Star state or seen what a production they make of interscholastic football. Then, in 1948, as a sophomore running rampant in the shadow of the great Doak Walker, he led the Mustangs with 603 yards rushing. It was even better in 1949, as Kyle paced the entire Southwest conference in rushing with 777 yards, touchdowns with 12 and punting with a 45-yard average. That was the year of his greatest triumph. For in the final game of the season, Rote was a terror against mighty Notre Dame. He ran with berserk fury to scoore three touchdowns and very nearly scored a single-handed upset of the Fighting Irish. Out from under the shadow of the widely-heralded Walker last season, Rote was a near-unanimous all-America. Running, passing and catching for the Mustangs, Kyle gained a short mile and was named by Giant coach Steve Owen as "one of the greatest football players I ever saw." This brought but a shy grin from the Killer, who expects to play "a few seasons" and then go into business in San Antonio. And for the kind of action you like in a game you need a MacGregor racket. It's built for ACTION. Nylon-strung, light double-braced frame, sure-grip hardwood handle. A MacGregor racket is made to last! $7.50 - $16.50 SEE THEM AT— KIRKPATRICK'S 715 MASS. "My boys played pretty well," he said. "I was particularly pleased with Crawford and Swartzell in their doubles victory."
