--- UNIVERSITY DAILY KANSAN, LAWRENCE, KANSAS MONDAY, APRIL 23, 1951 PAGE SIX Youths Ignore Books And Movies For TV But Grow Tired Of It, Survey Shows New York (U.R.)-Teen-age youths are reading less and skipping more movies-all because of television. A survey conducted by Dr. Paul Witty, Northwestern university professor of education, also showed that boys and girls become less enthusiastic about television as they grow older. "Among the 64 per cent whose families own television sets," he said, "It was found that the average sophomore views TV about 18 hours a week, juniors 14 hours and seniors, 12 hours." Witty's results were based on a study of boys and girls in Oak Park and River Forest, Ill., two Chicago suburbs. He found that 44 per cent of the teen-agers now attend movies less frequently than before television. He also found that one-third of the students read less, although those who do read are reading better material. He said the most ardent television fans are those in the sophomore group and that some of the enthusiasm wears off as the students reach the junior and senior classes. Witty said the survey showed only about 30 per cent of the parents maintain regular viewing schedules in the home. Many students, he said, are permitted to view the programs irregularly, during any hours which are otherwise unoccupied. Fifty per cent were encouraged to view TV programs only after completion of school home work. Witty also asked teachers about television and found most of the instructors admitted educational possibilities of television. They recommended that viewings should be guided and supervised. The survey, as expected, showed high school boys preferred sports events as programs. The teachers were on the more instructive side.
