UNIVERSITY DAILY KANSAN, LAWRENCE, KANSAS PAGE FOUR MONDAY. APRIL 23,1951 Tennis Team Wins Big Seven Opener,7-0 The K.U. tennis team won their Big Seven opener April 19 by defeating Nebraska at Lincoln 7-0. The Jayhawks meet Kansas State here today at 2 p.m. Coach Glen Tongier terms the Wildcats as "real good." Kansas completely dominated the meet at Nebraska. Every man won his match in straight sets and only two games went to the full count of 6-4. K. U.'s No. 1 man, lefty Charley Crawford, defeated Bob Radin 6-3, 6-2 Bob Swartzell, No. 2 player, had little trouble stopping Jamie Curran 6-1, 6-4. In the doubles matches Crawford and Swartzell teamed together in the first line outfit to stop Radin and Weaver 6-3, 6-1. John Freiburger, an unorthodox tennis player who shoots every shot from a straight forward position, had the best score of the day. He walloped Walt Weaver 6-1, 6-0. Ranson and Thompson won over Curran and Bunton 6-2, 6-4. topped Jack Ranson defeated Andy Bunton 6-1, 6-4, and Bill Thompson stopped Jeff Delton 6-1, 6-3. The victory left the Jayhawks undefeated this season. They have scored earlier victories over Washburn and Baker. Emporia Tilt Postponed The Varsity baseball game against Emporia State was postponed due to wet grounds. Originally scheduled for Saturday, no date has as yet been set. The Jayhawkers return to Big Seven play Friday when they travel to Ames for two games against the Iowa State Cyclones. Following that, the team will move to Columbia for another two-game series with Missouri. Heir Takes Pay Cut San Diego, Calif. (U.P.) — George Holmes, 20-year-old heir to a multi-million dollar mining fortune, landed a new job which pays $75 a month. He enlisted as a private in the air force. Falkenburg, a San Antonio, Texas, lad, blazed to a first, a second, a fourth, and two fifth-place finishes in the final five events Saturday to edge Jim Cooke, a Lincoln, Pa., university product, for the title, 6,519 to 6,487. The meet was held April 18 and when the splishing was over the Phi Gams had more than doubled the score of the second place team. On a 5-3-2-1 basis for the individual events and a 7-5-3-1 basis for the relays, the Phi Gams totaled 45, the Phi Psis 18, Sigma Chi 16 and Beta 14 for the first four places. The winners presented a well-balanced team that had no real standouts, but relied upon superior depth for their winning total. John Amberg, Jack Jester and Gordon Stucker were the mainstays of the Fiji entry. High scorer in the meet was Dick Effin of Sigma Chi with firsts in the 60-yard breast stroke and 60-yard individual medley. He swam on the third place 120-yard medley relay team.
