Group To Celebrate Author's Centennial The Hawthorne Centennial committee will observe the 100th anniversary of the first American literary classic, Mrs. Ruth Gagliardo, a member of the committee, announced today. The novel "The Scarlet Letter" by Nathaniel Hawthorne, was first published in April. 1850. Mrs. Gagliardo, the wife of Domenico Gagliardo, professor of economics, is national chairman of reading and library service of the National Congress of the Parents and Teachers association. Chairman of the committee is Mark Van Doren, critic and author. Other members are Francis Brown, editor of the N.Y. Times book review, Dr. Milton Lord, president of the American Library association, Harrison Smith, president of the Saturday Review of Literature, Edward Weeks, editor of the American Weekly, and The Week Books critic and author. A centennial folder is being distributed to high schools and literary societies. Mrs. Gagliardo said. Mark Van Doren, committee chairman, will conduct a television review of "The Scarlet Letter" on the Westinghouse "Studio One" program.
