FRIDAY, DECEMBER 16, 1940 UNIVERSITY DAILY KANSAN, LAWRENCE, KANSAS PAGE FIVE Kansas Schools Receive Funds Topeka — (U.P) — Kansas county treasurers will begin receiving checks this week for the biggest elementary school-support program in the history of the state. Elementary schools will receive over 12 million dollars in state funds during the fiscal year. Approximately half the amount will be included in the distribution to be made Thursday. Additional payments on the grant will be made Wednesday, March 15. The distribution of funds is the result of legislative action taken early this year. The school-aid program was adopted to encourage smaller classroom units and better trained teachers. Funds are allotted under a formula based upon teacher experience and the number of students in each classroom. Sedgwick and Wyandotte counties, the two most populous in the state, will get the largest share of the funds under the support program. Both counties will receive over one million dollars.
