6 Wednesday, October 7, 1970 University Daily Kansan Coach Pleased with Progress As Hawks Look to Conference By BOB NORDYKE BY BOB NORDYRE Kansas Sports Welter Pepper Rodgers clapped his "Mod sled" on his desk, flicked on his stereo, molded his royal blue baseball cap, lit his pipe and reflected on KU's nonconference football record. He also reflected on the Big Eight race, Saturday's game with Kansas State, coaching, politics and music. "I're realistic about what we did," explained Rodgers. "Some people expected us to be 13, but we very pleased with our record." Rodgers becomes the pragmatic discussing the 3-1 record with non-league opener KU's best record under Best pick. Rodgers said he hadn't attempted to use the noninterference schedule to achieve any goals for the team other than winning. "We're playing them one at a time," he mused. "We just try to get better, that's what we practice for." saturday marks KU's entrance into the Big Eight race with a win over LSU in Kansas State. Noting the records of Big Eight teams after four wins, KU was fourth. The Baltimore Orioles last week for the first time ranked Penn State the week before--Rodgers conceded there are no certainties in this conference. "The Big Eight's here and we've got to start somewhere," Pepper said, "but the first game when he was a little easier than K-State. Then Rodgers turned to the Big Eight shaking his head. "Now, who's going to play good; then you goodly good teams in this league." A song caught his attention. "I love my music." He winked. "You know, listening is just about my favorite pastime." He held with the idea of having it fitted to the bench during games. Winning football games is another of his favorite pastimes and Rodgers said he felt last week's win over New Mexico is the Hawks best all around effort since 1985. He said, "I even enjoyed it myself." Pepper returned to the subject of Saturday's game at Manhattan and the sell-out crowd Finally, Rodgers commented the crowd and said he experienced it there, although his appearance probably had little to do with this. Then came a little country football game. "Govemor's a governor is like a football coach," he observed, "both spend a short time in of- "I guess others are finding out what football coaches have known all along," he added. Baltimore Looks to Series There was little celebration or champagne Monday when the Orioles clinched their second straight pennant and their third last five years by clobbering Minnesota Twins, 6-1. BALTIMORE (UPI)—The Baltimore Orioles are starting to take a new approach in pennant for granted the same way the old Yankees did in their 1970s. While some champagne corks popped, some of the Orioles were the World Series loss to the New York Mets than at the victory over the twins behind Jim Palmer's 12-strike-out performances. Rodgers had nothing but praise for the Wildcats and indicated the Jayhawks will need a good effort if they are to have a chance of Assistant Kansan Sports Editor The Kansas Jayhawks went with the Rodgers team to the Rodgers team the team's second straight "poor practice." "You'll see a celebration like you 'never saw before in your life' if we win the World Series," Pete Richard said as he commented on his team's victory over Oriole dressing room. "The World Series is what we want." "If they take that (the Jayhawks) passing game) away from us we will be severely hurt." "We've got to the they've got the people to do it." winning. Although offense has been considered the fortale of the 'Cats by many, Rodgers centered on his kudu, on the team's "Kansas State has a great defense," Rodgers said adding the 'Cats are particularly strong in the defensive secondary. Detroit did it in 1934 and 1935 along with the Yankees. KU is expected to test K-Sate's secondary with the passing arm of quarterback Dan Heck. Heck currently ranks third among big Eight passers while the Wildcats are outfitted for team force teams in passing defense Manning the three-man Wildcat secondary will be Clarence Scott, Tim Ricketts and Mike Kail of safety. "I would rather open our conference season against a team that was Kansas State," Rodgers said. "I would be told I don't know. I would only say that Kansas State is one better team in the conference." Rodgers said because of the strong secondary, K-State will utilize an eight-man front line unit that it doubled tough to run against. KU 'Sluggish' in Practice "This makes them more vulnerable in the defensive secondary but they have the ability to make up for it." Rodgers said. Centerfielder Jim Holt called The Jayhawks have not lost to the Wildcats in Manhattan since 1941 when KU absorbed a 28-6 victory. They were not concerned with the streak.
