Rapists and Molesters University Daily Kansan Tuesday, October 6. 1970 7 Lone Women on Streets Provide Easy Targets for Sex Offenders Even Today's Liberated Woman By JAN GOODISON Kansan Staff Writer ... can be helpless when all alone Trees surrounded the single streetlight in the middle of the block and cast their shadows on the wall. A woman was walking when a harsh voice broke the silence. She screamed, broke away and ran up the stairs. Sexually-oriented assaults and exhibitionism are continuous threats to Lawrence residents and University of Kansas students, according to local police and doctors. Dr. Raymond A. Schwegler, director of health services at Watkins Memorial Hospital, said the problem in Lawrence is just as serious as in other cities across the country, with no knowledge. Schwegler said, Watkins has had cases of assault involving women this year. Occasionally exhibitionists try to get help because they cannot control their behavior, be it Dr. Schraeter said that the attacker does see himself as mentally ill and prefers to be alone with his patient. Exhibitionists are not usually physically dangerous, Schraeder said. "The reaction he wants to get to her get scared. An exhibitionist is going to do anything and can't make normal advances to a female." Sexual molesters are more harmful, Schraeder said, because they sometimes engage in criminal behavior also. It might be that someone is driving how dangerous one might be, he said. Dr. Schraeder said a woman sometimes plays a big part in provoking her attack by over the top attitude and appearance. Many incidents occur when a woman accepts a ride with a man. "What a woman's reasoning behind getting picked up by a strange man?" he held his breath. "It was a lie." KANSAN women to, but I never could understand the flashy dressed woman that was surprised and even frigid when a man made a pass at her," he said. Sensationalism in the mass media plays a but role in emphasizing criminal sexual acts, DAVID R. GUILLER, CINEMATOGRAPHY He added that sex crimes are bloom up and make every paper in the country, although a murder may be only local news. Both are equally horrific, yet the sex crime is greatly emphasized. The public wants revenge and punish men, not treatment, he said. In advising defense against an attacker, Dr. Ramsdorf said he does not discourage screaming from attackers screened by security. "It is a natural reaction and only the girl with karate or other self-defense training can protect herself against aggression. However, the attacker can be very tough and communication and fear can provoke him." he said. Capt. Boll Ellison, of the University of Kansas Traffic and Security Office, said if a woman is attacked, she should "get loose and hurt him (the attacker) doing it." "Guns and chains will often times get you trouble rather than help, because if an attacker gets one of these, you've given him a weapon," he said. A girl may use familiar items that she has been using for haircuts, suggested hairsprays, which causes choking and burning. The flay end of a tightly rolled newspaper is a good defense when a blow is made. According to Ellison, sexual attacks appear to be on the rise because more are being reported and exposed. He emphasized the necessity of reporting "any suspicious activity whether it appears to be sexual or not." "Getting it reported is the biggest problem," he said, "because the longer the time lag between reporting the incident and receiving the notification, the chance that the case won't be cleared." To illustrate, Ellison said a survey in Los Angeles showed a two-minute time gap between the actual occurrence of the crime and its being reported allowed only a 50 per cent chance of case clearance. A five minute gap lowers the chance for clearance to 0 or 15 For prevention and security against assault, Lawrence residents and KU students can protect themselves by using common sense. "There are certain precautions you take here just as you would anywhere else. The problem is no greater here than elsewhere. Remember that if you must walk at night, walk in groups of two or more. Stay in lightened areas; people are around. Specifically around reserved areas and shrubbery. But if something should happen, report it immediately." Ellison said. He also emphasized remembering vehicle and personal descriptions. Without this information, and unless it is reported important for clearance of case it greatly reduced. According to Ellison, security is tighter because of valuable physical facilities on campus which could be endangered because of recent campus disturbances. There are now 24-hour patrol activities on campus. If manpower is available, a foot camper may be used. The Traffic and Security Office is located in Bosch Auditorium with buzzer at the front entrance to be used if the doors are locked, report any suspicious activity, call 04-3516 'Second Wave of Feminism' Workshops Consider Woman's Image, Life Styles The series is sponsored by the KU Commission on the Status of Women. New perspectives on role definitions and lifestyle for men and women were discussed Monday in the first workshops in the "Second Wave of Feminism" series. Participants in the "Revolutionizing the household" workshop included Elizabeth Mackenzie, graduate student, Peggy Mackenzie, Topke, student Kathryn Kasten, Des Moines, graduate student. The workshop debated women's roles in the household. Woman's role has been jeopardized by advertisers who have created the illusion that a woman fulfilled mujer, one participant said. Women have a stereotyped, housewife image which requires them to wash dishes, fix meals and clean the house, another said. They are also known as "empty trash, mow the lawn and wash the car." - One member of the group stated there needed to be a socialization process between them. This would involve sharing of household or "better yet performing them together." The second workshop, "Will Marriage Turn You On For Fifty Years?" also discussed life styles and role definitions by projecting participants in the workshop into new roles. The interaction groups each were composed of 10 persons. The group members were given hypothetical life profiles. Example: 75, married with two children and a daughter, who then presented with a problem about his life and asked what he would do to solve it. "Second Wave of Feminism" has scheduled other workshops for this week. Tuesday's program will include *Economic Justice*, a course taught by Frances Horowitz, professor of human rights. development at 4 p.m. in the Kansas Union Council Room. "The Panel of American Women" will be comprised of a Jewish, Indian, Negro, Protestant and white woman at 4:30 p.m. ir McCollum Hall.
