University Daily Kansan Tuesday, October 6, 1970 5 Rodgers Plans No Changes for K-State By DON RAKER Assistant Kansan Sports Editor Pepper Rodgers said Monday he would put nothing new into the KU game. The KU led eight eighter with Kansas State. "We're going to play the same way we have all year," Rodgers said after the Jahawys' two-hour drill in Memorial Stadium. Last week Rodgers indicated he might close this week's KU practices to the public but complete open to everyone wanted. "It's impossible to have a closed place here (in Memorial Stadium) so we're not going to anything new in them, Rodgers said." The Jayhawks' big task Saturdays is be stopping the Widows' Lilya famed quarterback, plagued by injuries throughout most of the season, led K-State to an upset 12-5 in the second round Saturday to put the Widows at the top of the league standings and help them have one win against no losses. Just as long as we win all that counts." Rodgers listed only one personnel change for the game. Duke Holden will replace Pat sports KANSAN trouble getting to the quarterback all year." No doubt quarterbacks will be in the spotlight Saturday as KU has also relied heavily on its signal caller, Dan Heck. Heck, the junior college transfer who was named KU's back-of-the-week for his play against New Mexico, has been bounced as one of the league's top passers and total offense leaders. In four games he has completed 36 of 78 passes for 600 passes, he completed six, including three for touchdowns, for 166 yards. He averaged a whopping 28 yards per com- pound, considerably by a 66-yard touchdown strike to flanker Ron Jessie. That play is the longest in a scrimmage for the Jayhawks. After the game Heck said he was looking forward to the Kansas State game but that he was disappointed it a test between him and Dickey. The Baby Jays will enter the game on Thursday, Feb. 14, for a 40-18 loss to Oklahoma last week. For K-State yearnings it will be Saturday. The game will mark the zerom meeting between KU and R State in 2013. WEDNESDAY BARGAIN NIGHT DIME DRAWS with the Young Raiders Wednesday RED DOG Davenport Leads Hawks' Defense Gary Davenport, senio, linebacker from Wellesville, is the leading tackler for the Kansas tacklers after the first four games. Davenport, who sat out most of the Texas Tech game because of an injury, has been credited with 15 unassisted tackles and 21 assisted stops for a total of 36 tackles. She has also recovered one fumble and been credited with breaking up one pass. Second on the tackling list is defensive back Gary Adams. The Bartlesville, Okla. sophomore has 31 tackles, nine unassisted and 22 of the assisted variety. He also passes interceptions with two and has been credited with breaking up two passes. Tied for third in the defensive statistics are linebackers Kenny Page and Steve Roach. Page, who was the team' leading tackler last year, misses Saturday's game with New Mexico because of sickness but has still managed to make 2 saves. The team made City junior has made nine unassisted tackles while receiving help on 18. Roach, a Raytown, Mo. junior, has collected his 27 tackles with 11 unassisted stops and 16 assigned ones. The KU defense has been the victim of substantial criticism during its season's early going. But much change in talk has been quelled by strong performances in the last two seasons against Syracuse and New Mexico. Pepper Rodgers said at the season's start that his defensive unit was a question mark with only two starters back from last year. But of late Rodgers has had praise for the unit's fast development evidenced by further improvement with each game. The Jayhawks will face their stiffest defensive test Saturday when they meet the offensive lows led by quarterback Lynn Dickey, the Wildcats are expected to utilize the pass most of the day thus putting added pressure on the Jayhawks' defensive backs. Gaining lineman-of-the-week honors last week for his effort against the New Mexico Lobos in a 41-39 loss to Perkins. The Topeka sophomore exemplified the continued KU defense improvement with a game-high seven shots, seven shots including one behind the line of scrimmage. Perkins also caused one Lobo defensive fielder to defenders recovered. Perkins has been credited with 16 tackles for the year. Three of them have come from the line of scrimmage resulting in 14 yards lost for KU opponents. Kansas State coach Vince Lynch is wrong with the KU defense is its youth but Rodgers feels his is maturing with each game.
