Sparked by Martin and Fahey with 14 and 10 points respectively, the fast breaking Deuces led all the way and were able to By COOPER ROLLOW Daily Kansan Sports Editor Kansas finished the football season ranked twelfth best team in the nation in the Associated Press poll. Below Kansas were rated scores of teams which—two years ago—were regarded as the cream of the nation's football crop while the Jayhawkers clung to their habitual rung at the bottom of the gridiron ladder. Now Kansas rates only one niche behind powerful Army, and tops such sterling elevens as Mississippi. California, Oklahoma, Rice, Kentucky, Missouri, Illinois, T.C.U., Georgia, U.C.L.A., and many, many, others. Jim Tatum, whose Oklahoma footballers were co-champions with Kansas in 1946, recently was named Southern conference Coach of the Year. Tatum, now coach at Maryland, was presented the award after being selected in a poll of 134 sports writers and radio commentators throughout the Southern conference area. Maryland will meet Georgia in the 'Gator bowl at Jacksonville New Year's day. * * The Police Gazette will preser Jersey Joe Walcott with a $2,50 silver and jewel studded belt a "world heavyweight boxing champion" within the next ten days. The last boxer to receive a similar Gazette trophy was Jess Willard shortly before he won the championship. Eddie Eagen, New York Boxing commissioner, took just 12 minutes of his time to hear the Jersey Joe Walcott protest of the recent Louis decision before giving Walcott's manager the boot. * * When the Jayhawkers take on Notre Dame in Hoch auditorium December 23, it will be the first chance cage fans from this area have had to see a top-flight team from the eastern side of the Mississippi since Missouri upset a greatly surprised bunch of Whiz Kids last year in Kansas City. Illinois, by the way, barely edged out a victory over Notre Dame, 40 to 38, Monday night. * * Each day we read of more players and coaches who are football "men of the year." Fritz Crisler is Coach of The Year, Johnny Lujack and Ray Evans are Players of The Year (depending on which poll you rely upon), and Jim Tatum is Southern Conference Coach of The Year. Before someone else gets the idea, let us nominate Kansas' E. C. Quigley as Athletic Director of The Year. "The Quarterback," a section of Sporting News, has this to say about the coming Miami classic: "The Kansas-Georgia Tech game in an enlarged Orange Bowl carries much weight. It features Rififi' Ray Evans and the Big Six conference cochamps, undefeated in 14 straight games, against the razzle-dazze Rambling Wreck, loser in only one game all season and that an upset to Alabama, 14 to 7." This corner may be a trifle on the dense side, but for the life of us we can't derive any meaning from the following postal card, from a Mr. H. I. Miller, College freshman. "Dear Ed: Your sports staff lacks originality, color, and often a disregard for accuracy." We thank Mr. Miller for his comment and suggest that he enroll in an English course so that he will "no longer fail to lack a disregard hold off the late rally by the Fighting Five. The losers were paced in their rally by Bushno and Montgomery who scored most of their points in the last half. Playing steady controlled ball, the 1037 Club checked the fast breaking Wheelin' Dealers 21 to 11. The winners were led through the game by Snider with nine points and Nichols with six. Woodman led the losers with four. The Nubbins ran up, the highest score of the season on Tom's Boys, whipping them 58 to 23. Scoring 36 points in the first half, Nubbins were led by Ebel who racked 13 points in the first half. In the second half Lewton and Eilers took over the scoring burden with 17 and 13 points respectively. Joe Ellis was high for the losers with 11 points. Big Leagues May Grow New York — (UP) The major league meetings were reported today to be "leaving the doors open" for a total of four Pacific Coast league clubs to enter the National and American circuits, but that wasn't what the far-westerners wanted. Officials of the Pacific organization announced heatedly that they wouldn't split up their 43-year-old circuit and let four clubs join the Majors. Instead, they were fighting to have the entire Pacific Coast league granted major status. If they couldn't get major league status, the west coast officials would be satisfied with a five-year probationary period in which the Pacific circuit would be free of the major league draft, "which causes us to sell our best players at a sacrifice." The National League, at its opening meeting yesterday, was reported to have voted a decisive "no!" to both Pacific propositions. At the same time, it was reported to have gone on record as having no objections to two Pacific clubs joining the league if such procedure would not violate baseball law. Such an addition would expand the National league to 10 clubs. The American circuit was expected to take similar action today. Tomorrow, the ultra-progressive idea could be voted upon, or at least discussed, at the joint meeting of the national and American outfits. Commissioner A. B. Chandler, who will preside at the joint meeting, is understood to favor heartily the entrance of four Pacific clubs to the majors. Most likely candidates apparently were the Pacific "Big Four"—Los Angeles, Hollywood, San Francisco and Oakland.
