PAGE SIX UNIVERSITY DAILY KANSAN, LAWRENCE, KANSAS TUESDAY, DECEMBER 9, 1947 The Editorial Page Open Letter To Santa Claus Dear Santa Claus, We've got a big order for you, but it comes from a big institution, the University of Kansas, Lawrence, Kansas, U.S.A. Some of the things we want for Christmas may be a little out of your line, so we're writing early, First, we'd like to ask for a Christmas present for someone else, the people of Europe. Please, Santa, please see to it that congress gets aid to them in time. And then while you're over there would you drop down to Palestine? You may not be well-known in that region, but it would be a wonderful Christmas present for the whole world if you'd spread a little Christmas spirit around Jerusalem and Bethlehem and see to it that no Red Star comes out of the East. Then, Santa, only after you have taken care of these important things, maybe you could glide down on Mt. Cread. We'd like to ask you for a few little personal things, insignificant to the world and far too important to us. When you are through over there, won't you turn Donner and Blitzen toward the United States and see what you can do about our prices. Maybe you can fill our national Christmas sock with enough goods to begin to satisfy demand. First, there are the students. Please bring us lighter assignments from professors who are sometimes unmerciful. Bring the administration a budget that will raise teachers' salaries. Over in the athletic department—their Christmas tree is already loaded, but perhaps you could remind them that intercollegiate sports are still primarily for the students. Maybe you could leave a note in the Robinson gym fireplace that when a school goes big time in sports, it's apt to overlook the students in the grab for bigger gate receipts. We just don't want that to happen here. Then, Santa, our University band has been faithful to the team. Maybe you could slip into Mr. Wiley's office and leave some money for a band trip to Minmi; or perhaps take something from the overloaded boughs of the Robinson Gym Christmas tree to help out the band. And finally, dear Santa Claus, if it's not too much, please send us a bowl of oranges for New Years. Sincerely and respectfully, The University Daily Kansan Insanity in individuals is something rare—but in groups, parties, nations, and epochs it is the rule.—Nietzche. Beat the Heck out of Georgia Tech! Invest In Health The Christmas season is here again. During this period our attention is directed to the needs of the less fortunate. Various organizations carry on drives to raise money to help mankind. One such activity will be active on the campus during the next few weeks—the anti-tuberculosis drive. Here is a chance for us to do our part in fighting this dread disease. Booths will be set up in Frank Strong and Fraser halls to sell Christmas seals. The money from the sale of these seals will be divided among the county, state, and national funds. The announcement that 75 per cent of this money will remain in Douglas county should provide the needed incentive for us to provide aid for ourselves by purchasing these seals. Let's forego that "extra" coke and place the money where it may save a life. Use these seals liberally on the Christmas cards that you send and the presents that you give. Let's buy what we can. Be the first in your group to do your share. By helping fight this disease we are also helping ourselves.Dave Clymer. Union To Give Christmas Party A Christmas party for members of all Student Union Activities committees will be held 7 to 10 p.m. Wednesday at the Union hallroom, Harlan Livingood and his orchestra will play. Entertainment will be by the Modern choir and a special program arranged by the entertainment committee. Refreshments will be served. Hepcats vs Ickies Dear Editor, I note that Dean Swarthout has disapproved of the Duke Ellington concert. This action is another example of the regrettable modern tendency to distinguish between classical and popular musics, with an unbridgable gap between. Then everyone chooses sides and we have a "Texas rules" fight between the "long hairs" and the "pop" fans. Actually, from the historical standpoint and at the present, the gap between "classical and "popular" music isn't so great. What really happens is that the good music of one period becomes the classical music of the next century. The music of Tschalkovsky, Bizet, Mozart and others proved that point. Probably the music of Gershwin, Kern, Ellington, and others will prove it again. Obviously a lot of music isn't worth listening to, whether classical or popular. Time serves the function of sifting out this chaff, and the good music remains. Then we will call it all classical, and the fight will begin all over again on the new music of the 21st century. It's probably enough to say that a lot of people, ranging from Leopold Stowkowski to Benny Goodman, rate Duke Ellington high as both musician and composer. Instructor of Political Science Russell H.
