9, 1947 TUESDAY, DECEMBER 9. 1947 UNIVERSITY DAILY KANSAN, LAWRENCE, KANSAS PAGE FIVI By PAUL ZEH Assistant Sports Editor The married men among this year's Jayhawkers might band together to form a potent football squad. There are an even dozen, including seven linemen and five backs. We give you the 1947 All-Married team: Marvin Small, left end Don Ettinger, left tackle Don Fambrough, left guard Ralph Brown, center Dick Channell, right guard Steve Renko, right tackle Otto Schnellbacher, right end Lynne McNutt or Tip Mester, quarter T. A. Scott, left half Bud French, right half Frank Pattice, backfull There y're, and we'd say it's quite an outfit. Good passing by "Daddy" McNutt and "Texas Tom" Scott; strong punters by Scott and Frank Fattee; ample weight from Dick Channell, 240-pounder who is shifted to guard for convenience; pass catchers, deluxe; place-kicker Fambrough; and speedster French. You couldn't ask for much more even on an unmarried team. Otto Schnellbacher is working out daily with the varsity basketball team during the interim before Orange Bowl drills start for the football Jayhawkers. Already in top condition physically after almost five months in football pads, the high-scoring forward from Sublette has only to sharpen his eye before he takes his place on the court right after New Year's. A three-time All-Big Six man like Schnelllie will be hard to keep on the bench this year, and should fit in well with Phog Allen's promising crop of sophomores. *** The holiday trip to Miami will be a new and stimulating experience for a lot of Jayhawkier players and fans, but it will be just like "old home week" for coaches George Sauer and Vie Bradford. Head coach Sauer spent many months at Pensacola on the aircraft carrier "Enterprise" shortly after he entered the naval service in 1942. Backfield coach Bradford is a graduate of the University of Alabama, where he was one of the all-time athletic greats for the Crimson Tide. He has seen previous bowl game action, having quarterbacked the Tide into the Rose Bowl in 1938. Bradford's professional baseball career took him to Florida, where he managed Jacksonville of the Sally league in 1940. Mike Getto, assistant coach, has also played in a Jan. 1 football classic. Mike was a two-time All-American tackle for the Pittsburgh Panthers which met Stanford in the 1928 Rose Bowl. Eddie Eagan Won't Interfere With Louis-Walcot Decision Eddie Eagan, New York boxing commissioner, devoted about 12 minutes to hearing the claims of Jersey Joe Walcott and his manager, and then issued a statement claiming "no desire to interfere with the decision of the judges." Louis has agreed to a rematch with Walcott, but Walcott has balked at the gate split. Frat League Starts IM Play With 10-Game'A' Schedule With margins of victory ranging from two to 26 points, the fraternity "A" team basketball league got off to a fast start Monday with a 10-game card. Trailing throughout most of the game, The Sigma Nu's tallied in the final minute of play on baskets by Williams and Ashley to hand the Phil Gam's a 26 to 22 loss. Williams' nine points were high for the game. Paced by big Ralph Moon, the Beta's opened their league play with a decisive 39 to 13 victory over Alpha Kappa Lambda. Moon had 12 points to take high scoring honors. The Kappa Sig's scored at will as they defeated the Theta Tau's 39 to 15. Sauder with 12 points and Pihl-blad with 10 sparked the winners while Reid scored 11 points for the losers. Sigma Chi led all the way to ease by Phi Kappa 29 to 25. A last quarter drive brought the Phi Kappas within 1 point for a moment before Sigma Chi recovered. Leonard with 13 points for the winners was top scorer. The Sig Alph's started their season off with a win as they beat Kappa Alpha Psi 36 to 11. Cross and Thompson with 12 and 11 points respectively were the big guns in an S.A.E. attack that rolled up a 15 to 6 halftime lead. The Sig Ep's, stone cold the first half, trailed at halftime 7 to 2, but with Woodring, Short, and Carson leading the way, they came back to beat Alpha Kappa Psi 25 to 13. The A.V.C. surprised the Tekes by shading them 20 to 18 in a seesaw battle that saw the Tekes lead 12 to 6 at the half. Malden of the winners and Swope of the Tekes led scoring with 9 points. Led by Powell with 11 points, the Phi Delt's rolled over Triangle 32 to 13. A smooth working Phi Delt defense smothered any Triangle offensive threats. A well balanced Phi Psi队 paced by McCully with 12 points handed Delta Tau Delta a 27 to 12 defeat in their first game. The superior height of the Phi Psi squad enabled it to dominate both backboards. Alpha Tau Omega shaded Delta Chi 16 to 14 in a thriller that was decided in the last few moments of play.
