PAGE FOUR UNIVERSITY DAILY KANSAN, LAWRENCE, KANSAS TUESDAY, DECEMBER 9. 1947 Defense Is Major Question As KU Prepares For Opener When the Kansas Jayhawkers take the floor in Emporia against an all-veteran Emporia Teachers quintet Saturday night, K.U. fans can take their first glances at the big question mark of the year. That question mark, of course, pertains to Kansas basketball, and whether cagey Dr. F. C. "Phog" Allen has anything on the string he isn't letting the sports world know about. an inch shorter The Jayhawker faithful have pretty well decided this will be a rebuilding year in Kansas basketball. One doesn't have to look any farther than the roster of missing men to be impressed with the huge renovating job facing the veteran K. U. coach this winter. Black Evans Gone Gone are Charlie Black and Ray Evans, both of whom played on three championship and two undefeated conference combines. Missing also will be Owen Peck, last year's regular center, and Wendell Clark, the raven-haired hustler who kept Evans company at guard and gained a reputation as the most underrated man on the Jayhawk squad. This will leave Dr. Allen with only two performers who can boast as much as two years varsity experience at Kansas. One of these, Otto Schnellbacher, won't be available for basketball until after the football team has disposed of Georgia Tech in the Orange Bowl. The other vet is Max Kisselle, who just returned from a stretch in the service after two seasons on the Kansas firing line in 1942 and 1943. Gridman May Help Dr. Allen hopes also to utilize Hoyt Baker and Charlie Moffett, both of whom have chalked up two years Jawhawk service, and newcomers Cliff McDonald, Joe Mendenhall, Tom Scott, and Darrell Norris. The basketball squad has dwindled from more than 60 men to less than 20 since Dr. Allen opened drills October 15. Most of the group are sophomores and freshmen, described by the Kansas coach as "highly promising," but inexperienced compared with the stacks of veteran talent at Iowa State, Missouri, Oklahoma, and Colorado. At present five men are competing for the coveted forward positions. It's a struggle between Charlie Penny, classy star of Lawrence high school who showed up well last year; Gib Stramel, 1946 scoring sensation; Maurice Martin, returnee from the 1946 club; and lefthanders Jack Eskridge and Harold Endland, both of whom lettered in their first season last year. Waugh Is New Prospect The Jayhawkers will come up with a fine prospect at center in Jerry Waugh, who will be seeing his first college basketball. Reports have it that all Waugh needs is experience. But he'll be bucking against Kissell and Guy Mabry, "B" team hopeful, who also hope to get the starting nod. Four guards are likely to share the burden throughout the season. They are Bil Sapp, holdover letterman from Augusta; Gene Barr, another returnee from the 1946 crew; Claude Houchin, who was the surprise of the '46 season; and Sonny Enns, smooth Newton product. Dr. Allen chiefly is concerned over the lack of power men under the backboard. Schnellbacher and Barr pack enough strength, but the remainder of the squad are built along slender lines. Martin is the tallest of the lot, stretching to 6" $4\frac{1}{2}$". Houchin and Eskridge are only half an inch shorter. Schnellbacher Back Jan. 2 The club may eventually be fashioned around the versatile Schnell-bacher, three-time all Big-Six forward, who will get back from the Orange Bowl football game just in time to get suited up for the 12-game conference basketball grind. He will miss the important December skirmishes with Emporia Teachers and Notre Dame, and the Big Six tournament in Kansas City. Building a defense may prove Dr. Allen's major worry. Charlie Black was regarded as the greatest post guards in the history of the conference. Evans was a tireless toiler and furious rebounder, while Peck and Clark effectively throttled the opposition's speed boys. Sociology Club Will Meet The Sociology club will have its annual Christmas party from 7:30 to 9:30 tomorrow in the Kansas room of the Union. Faculty members of the sociology department will be in charge of recreation. Refreshments will be served. CINEMAN . WATCHES RINGS CHOKERS 710½ Md HO! HO!
