PAGE SIX UNIVERSITY DAILY KANSAN, LAWRENCE, KANSAS MONDAY, DECEMBER 8, 1947 Basketball Hits Full Speed In Major Games This Week New York—(UP)—Kentucky's basketball team was off and running like a blue grass race horse today, apparently determined to pace the nation and wipe out the bitter defeat suffered last season at the hands of Utah in the Madison Square Garden invitational. Coach Adolph Rupp's Kentuckians, who meet DePaul Wednesday night $ ^{4} $ Title Decision To Ed Eagan New York — (UP) — Arguments about the fight between Joe Louis and Jersey Joe Walcott may continue for years; but Eddie Eagan, Chairman of the New York Boxing Commission, was expected to announce today that Louis officially is still heavyweight champion of the world. Eagan was expected to make this announcement after a brief hearing at which Walcott, Manager Joe Webster, and at least one attorney had pointed out that on the basis of points and on the basis of the opinion of the majority of fans and sports writers, Friday night's decision favoring Louis should be reversed. No Reversal Chance. Boxing men agreed that there wasn't one chance in 10,000 that the decision of the two ring judges would be reversed to agree with the vote of Referee Ruby Goldstein, who favored challenger Walcott. Meanwhile, Mayor George E. Brunner of Camden, N.J., Walcott's home town—appealed to Abe J. Greene, president of the National Boxing Association—to recognize Walcott as champion. Brunner was backed by a similar appeal from the Camden Veterans' Action committee. Although Greene is boxing Commissioner for the state of New Jersey, in addition to being President of the N.B.A., it seemed virtually certain that he would take no action on a problem that was New York State's "baby." Orange Bowl Match Asked New York State is not a member of the Oceanic Realm Match Armed Operaena Royal Match Armed Harry Voiler, the promoter of Miami, Fla., who would have staged the return Rocky Graziano-Tony Zale middleweight fight at the Miami Orange Bowl on Feb. 12 if the Miami commission had sanctioned it, was in New York trying to interest Louis and Walcott in a return bout at the Bowl on Feb. 12. Marshall Miles, Louis manager, kayoed Voiler's plans by stating, "we are not interested in a Miami fight. We want to fight Walcott at Yankee Stadium next June." AAU Picks Rhodes As New Presiden Omaha, Neb. — (UP) — James A. Rhodes, mayor of Columbus, Ohio, succeeded Willard N. Greim of Denver as president of the Amateur Athletic Union of America today. The delegates selected New York City as site of the 1948 convention to be held Dec.2,3,4,5. steambooks twice last week, winning 72 to 18 and 71 to 22.
