Those headlines look familiar. They tell of the greatest homecoming in the history of the University Missouri. That event took place in 1921 when Missouri came to Lawrence for the homecoming game, the first in Memorial stadium, according to the University Daily Kansan for Nov. 23 of that year. Situation Caused Then as now, the athletic department was checking every possibility for packing more persons in to watch the annual struggle between the two rivals. The stadium, which contained only enough completed seats for about 16,000 persons, was still referred to by the students as "the stadium in front of McCook field." Twenty thousand persons were expected, and circus seats were placed on the cinder track for 1,280 persons. Six hundred ninety-two spectators sat on the old baseball bleachers and the treadways allowed for about 480 more. Crowded Again This Year This year's expected 37,000 will completely fill the seats in the stadium and spill over into 2,000 bleacher seats at the south end of the stadium. Box seats will be placed around the track for notables and standing room for about 900 persons around the ramp at the top of the stadium will be sold on the day of the game. In 1921, the Tigers had beaten Oklahoma, a team to which Kansas had lost. Kansas had taken Kansas State and Missoriara had lost that game. Missouri was confident of victory and Kansas was far from admitting defeat even though K.U. was "doped" to lose. Kansas won by a 15-9 margin. Rated Among Best Today, both Kansas and Missouri are playing a brand of football that isn't seen in the Big Six every year and both are rated among the top twenty teams in the nation. Some despoters have placed them in the top ten. Because of Missouri's loss to Oklahoma, a team with which K.U. played a scoreless tie, and Missouri's 47-6 thrashing of Nebraska, in contrast to Kansas' 13-7 edge, the two teams compare in strength with those of 26 years ago. In 1919, which was the seventh annual game K.U. played with Missouri, and the event that is credited with starting the present homecoming tradition, H.B. Hungerford of the entomology department took charge of the proceedings. Field For School Spirit The war had just ended and school spirit had been sacrificed for patriotism. A group of students who organized into what was known as the loyalty movement, sensed the need for arousing the fighting spirit of the team. "We wrote letters to alumni far and near urging them to come back to the University," Dr. Hungerford said today. This campaign was the first organized effort to bring the old grads back to the campus. We lost the game, 6-13. Reat Mizzou' The battle cry "beat Mizzou" originated in 1925 when the "Hobo day" activities excited the team, students, and alumni to such heights that they adopted "beat Mizzou" as a campus password. To show their appreciation of the college spirit, the team took that game 10-7. Every odd numbered year since 1919 has brought a homecoming with Missouri. This year, the high flying Kansas team, fighting it out with a powerful Missouri squad, coupled with the largest crowd in the history of Memorial stadium, will provide the greatest homecoming since the tradition was started.
