PAGE SIX UNIVERSITY DAILY KANSAN, LAWRENCE, KANSAS FRIDAY NOVEMBER 21,1947 Homecoming Kansas Alumni Find Department Changes Design Classwork Pays Off In Cash The department of design continues to grow with the needs of the times, according to Marjorie Whitney, chairman. The department offers six majors occupational therapy, design, commercial art, fashion illustration, interior design, and art education. Joan Johnson, '46, instructor in design, painted seven murals in the children's pavilion of the University of Kansas hospital in Kansas City. Ray Ottinger, instructor in commercial art, is scheduled for a one-man show in New York this winter. Sheldon Carey, assistant professor of design, has aided in the development of Kansas' volcanic ash for glazes. The 15 members of the faculty are no less creative, Carlyle Smith, instructor in jewelry design, had some of his work exhibited at Gorham's Fifth avenue, New York. Michael Andrews, instructor in design, gave demonstrations for teachers in Tennessee for the American Crayon company. Courses Changed But Feud Remains Graduates of the Engineering school returning to the campus for Homecoming will find that at least one thing remains the same—the engineers and the lawyers are still feudin'. The deans of the two school buried the hatchet March 21, 1947. However, the law students still keep a watchful eye on the statue in front of Green hall, if brush-wielding engineers again try to smear Uncle Jimmy with paint. T. DeWitt Carr, dean of the Engineering school, believes one of the greatest changes in the school in many years is the introduction of a program of humanistic-social courses in the curriculum. The new courses are planned to liberalize the engineering student's education and to give him a broader background to meet today's problems, Dean Carr said. The program requires all new engineering students to take 11 hours of non-technical elective subjects. It includes three hours of philosophy or psychology, four hours of either Western Civilization or Social Science Survey, and four elective hours. The present enrollment of the Engineering school is 2,168, including 14 women. Mechanical engineers lead the list with 472. Electrical engineers are second with 418. Former enrollment figures show 88 students in 1981, 160 in 1900, 435 in 1910, 643 in 1920, 649 in 1930, and 665 in 1940. Growth Is Rapid In Business School Graduates of the School of Business will notice several changes and additions in the school and its various departments when they return to the campus for Homecoming festivities. With the help of the Engineering school, the industrial management curriculum was set up. In August, 1943, a supply corps curriculum was organized for the N.R.O.T.C. unit at the University. The secretarial training department now has its own offices in Frank Strong annex, and the bureau of business research will be given office space in the annex soon. The present enrollment in the school in 730 as compared to 300 ten years ago,212,five years ago and 119 two years ago. The faculty has increased from 27 to 50. Nursing Enrollment Hasn't Increased There has been no increase in enrollment in the department of nursing in the past few years, Miss Sara Patterson, professor in the departments of home economics and nursing, said recently. An average of eight girls complete work here a semester and are transferred to the medical center in Kansas City to finish their work, Miss Patterson said. Kansas Museum Is Nation's Finest "It ranks equally with the National museum in Washington, D.C." "The best entomological museum in any school in the country is at this University," said Dr. Raymond Beamer, who supervises it. and with the American museum in New York as far as insect collections are concerned" he said. "We have about 4000 different species of insects. Most of them are from North America, north of Mexico. Some specimens come from Okinawa and the Philippine islands. Dr. H. B. Hungerford, head of the department, exchanges specimens with entomologists in foreign countries." A difficulty is that K.U. is running out of room for new types. The space on the second floor of Snow ball is almost filled. Authorities still are looking for new species, he added. Read the Daily Kansan daily.
