THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 20, 1947 UNIVERSITY DAILY KANSAN, LAWRENCE, KANSAS PAGE FIVI Sigma Chi To Meet Beta In Frat 'A' League Playoff Sigma Chi and Beta Theta Pi won semi-final games Wednesday and will meet Friday for the intramural football Fraternity "A" league championship. The Beta's passed their way to a 26 to 6 victory over Alpha Tau Omega and Sigma Chi stopped previously unbeaten Tau Kappa Epsilon Beta 26. A.T.O. 6 Bob Schwanzle led the Beta's to their semi-final victory by pitching four touchdown passes. Bill Jones kicked two extra points. Beta scored early in the first period when Schwanzle, from the A.T.O. 28-yard line, tossed to Shell in the end zone. The same combination gave Beta another six points a few minutes later after Neal Cramer had taken two Schwanzle aerials to move the ball to the A.T.O. 25. In the second quarter Chet Laniewski stopped a Beta drive by intercepting on the A.T.O. two successive passes from Laniewski to Herb Weidensaul carried the ball to the Beta 35-yard line but the Beta line held and forced the A.T.O.'s to punt. Starting from the 20-yard line, after Weidensaul's second half kickoff had gone into the end zone, Schwanzle passed to Cramer and Jervis to advance the ball to the A.T.O. 10-yard stripe. From that point Jervis took a pass from Schwanzle for the t.d. After the kick-off Nelson intercepted a兰iewski pass and the Beta's proceeded to the A.T.O. 5-yard line before being stopped. The A.T.O.'s took over and on their first play passed only to have Nelson intercept again and return it to the 12. Schwanzle passed to Cramer for another Beta touchdown. Early in the fourth quarter Weidensaul took a Beta punt on the A.T.O. 20-yard line and passed to Claude Mason on the Beta 20-yard marker. On the next play Mason scored the only A.T.O. touchdown after snagging a pass from Laniewski on the 10-yard line. Sigma Chi 14- Teke 6. Sigma Chi avenged its only defeat of the season by winning 14 to 6 from Tau Kappa Epsilon. The Tekes beat them 8 to 7 earlier this year. The Tekes scored first in the initial quarter on a pass from Howard Wilson to Charles Boulware in the end zone. The play followed a 20-yard Wilson aerial to Ken Crowley Sigma Chi struck back quickly a pass by Odd Williams to Lynn Leigh good for 35 yards and a score. Leigh kicked the extra point. Late in the third quarter Sigma Chi started its final drive, Lee Vogel threw a 30-yard pass to Williams setting up the touchdown. The tally came when Williams lateralled to Vogel, Vogel throw to Chuck Wagstaff, and Wagstaff tossed the ball into Joe Connelly's arms. Vogel hit Williams with a pass for the extra point. Independents Are Urged To Enter I-M Cage Teams More independent intramural basketball teams were urged to enter the fall league play today by Don Powell, intramural director. He pointed out that since there is a separate league for independent teams, a greater number would be needed. Last fall the independent teams made up three-fifths of the entries. Last Home Game RAY EVANS, twice all-American and a likely candidate for a third term, will be playing his last college game in Memorial Stadium Saturday against Missouri. Evans also has been chosen all-American in basketball, but because his eligibility ends this semester, he will not play with the Jayhawker squad again. Elliott Is Named Most Valuable New York—(UP)—Bob Elliott, rising to the peak of a long career in his first season with the Boston Braves, today was named the most Valuable Player in the National League, the first third baseman in the history of the majors ever to be selected for such an honor. Bounders, Dix Club Meet In I-M Finals The Independent intramural football crown will be at stake today when the Bounders and the Dix club clash. A victory for either team would give it the chance to meet the fraternity league representative for the University intramural championship. Boasting a 5-1 record through the regular season, the Bounders squeezed by Navy and trounced Smith hall to reach the finals, while the Dix club toppled Kappa Eta Kappa and scored a last-minute touchdown over the Law club to advance to the final bracket. The Bounders possess two good passers in Bob Hoke and Chuck Shanahan and a classy pass-snatching end in Sonny Watson.
