PAGE FOUR UNIVERSITY DAILY KANSAN. LAWRENCE, KANSAS THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 20, 1947 --- Kansas Strengthens Hold On National Defense Rank The University of Kansas Jayhawkers strengthened their claim to the runner-up spot in the nation in total defense last week as third-place Georgie Tech dropped to fourth after its loss to Alabama. The Jayhawkers played according to their season average against the Oklahoma Aggies, and their total defense average went up only about The Jayhawkers are now up to 17th in the national ranking of Associated Press. This is the first time this season the Red and Blue have climbed into the select top 20, and follows two 13 to 7 victories in which the Hawkers did not play up to par. The Jayhawkers received 56 points in the rating, as compared with 10 for the Missouri Tigers. Texas Christian, with whom we launched our season in "Blues Harbor", has not fared as well as the Jayhawkers, and received only 3 points in the national rankings. Among the teams rated below Kansas are Columbia, conquerers of Army; Rice, which tied Southern Cal; Purdue, which lost by only two touchdowns to Notre Dame; Kentucky, and Wisconsin. BY PAUL ZEH Assistant Sports Editor A triumph over the respected Tigers would certainly boost the men of Sauer into the top 15. The Tigers are highly regarded in such localities as Columbus, Ohio and Durham, N.C., where they worried the Buckeyes and overwhelmed the Blue Devils, respectively. *** Our most likely bowl bid, assuming eight or a dozen "ifs" do not exist, may come from the 'Gator Bowl at Jacksonville, Fla. This is not one of the top offers nor is it a minor bid. In fact, it might prove to be one of the games of the day this New Year's. Among the teams being courted are Alabama, Vanderbilt, and Mississippi State from the South. Opposing one of these will probably be some Big Six or east coast squad. Several weeks ago the directors listed as possible choices: Kansas, Oklahoma, Missouri, North Carolina, and Virginia. The Tar Heels, with Charlie Justice at the throttle, have a six-won two-lost record for the season, one loss being to Wake Forest by 19 to 7, the other a devastating setback to Texas, 34 to 0. Virginia, with a softer schedule than N. C., has lost only one in eight starts, but that was last week in their first real test of the seasons against Pennsylvania. One of these two will probably be dropped from consideration after they meet on Nov. 29, the winner fighting it out with one of the Big Six schools, for this other bid. Last year the Oklahoma Sooners trimmed the Tar Heels in the 'Gator Bowl, 34 to 14. It is unlikely that either of the two would be picked two years in a row unless they were the only good teams left after 21 other bowls had picked off the better clubs. So don't count us out. If we rank among the top 20 after Saturday, we are sure to get some bowl bids. The rest is up to the athletic department. The Lions still have a comfortable lead over the Jayhawkers with an 81 yard-per-game average. It was the fifth straight week that Pem State has led the country in both total offense and total defense. Moving up to displace Georgia Tech is William and Mary, whose total defense of 144.8 per game threatens Kansas for the second-place slot. W. and M. jumped from sixth place, chopping its average from 159.1 to 144.8 per game. The Jayhawkers show a better balanced defense than any other team in the country, with a seventh-place ranking in both rushing defense and forward-pass defense. Kansas, holding the Oklahoma Aggies to 39 yards passing, moved from 11th place to 7th place with the yardage average dropping from 54.3 yards to 52.4. The Kansas rushing defense is 88.4, a slight climb from last week's average, but consistently good enough to keep the Jayhawkers in seventh place.
