Bruce Etherington, graduate, Hamilton, Ontario, into its charter membership. Mu chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi held its initiation banquet in the English room of the Union Friday. 'Sororities Founded On Ideal Of Service' "Sororities are founded upon high ideals and are dedicated to service, honor and uprightness in human relationship," Mrs. Ruth Schmelklin, Pan Hellenic advisor at the University of Nebraska, told a meeting of all sorority members Monday. Emphasis was placed upon the need for a Pan Hellenic council in which, Mrs. Schmelklin believed, sororites could meet to discuss their mutual problems. Committees were appointed Monday for the annual Independent Student's association Christmas dance. Committee chairman are Wilson O'Connell, decorations; Malcom Pfoutz, intermission; and Betty Brooker, publicity. Mrs. Schmelkin was guest of honor at a dinner given by the Pan Hellenic council. Independents Name Dance Committees Paul H. Malone, professor, of economies, has been invited to a government research program in Washington, D.C. in December. The seven day program will discuss research in agriculture finance. The letter inviting Mr. Malone stated he had been invited because of his knowledge of taxes. The American Society of Mechanical Engineers will meet at 7:30 tonight in 101 Snow hall. They will discuss job opportunities. Three members of the I.S.A. will be at a desk in the Union lounge registering alumni from 3 to 6 p.m. Friday and from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday. Tel. 252 Trembly Is Soloist With Orchestra Sally Trembly, 17-year-old Fine Arts sophomore, made her third appearance of the season Tuesday as a violin soloist with the Kansas City Philharmonic orchestra. The concert is one of a series of five being presented during the fall semester by the orchestra for pupils of Kansas City public schools. While in grade school, she studied with Miss Olga Eitner and Prof. Karl Kurtzsteiner of the University faculty. At 10 years, she played the second movement of the Wieniawski concerto as soloist with the Lawrence Liberty Memorial High School orchestra over W.R.E.N., and appeared on the University School of Fine Arts programs in the 1942-1943 season. Miss Tremblay entered the University of Kansas in February, 1947. She is studying with W. Thomas Marrocco, associate professor of violin. In 1946 she won the first place scholarship of the Kansas City Musical club. Miller, pastor of the First Methodist church of Topeka, will speak at the annual Wesley Foundation-Kappa Phi Christmas dinner, at 5:30 p. m. Dec. 7, in the First Methodist Church. Dr. Miller To Speak At X-mas Dinner Dr. Miller has been pastor of the First Methodist church in Topeka for the past seven years. Previously, he was director of the Wesley Foundation of the University church, Madison, Wisconsin. About 200 guests are expected to attend. The dinner is held annually, but was discontinued temporarily during the war. GEOlogy Students To Put Out January Issue Of 'Compass' University geology students will edit the January issue of "The Compass." geology magazine. Staff members will be chosen from members of Sigma Gamma Epsilon, national honorary geology society. Ira Dubins, graduate student, will edit the issue. About half the contents will be written by students and the remainder by faculty. The magazine will also contain a register of alumni of the K. U. chapter of Sigma Gamma Epsilon, Dubins said.
