Buchele, graduate student in bacteriology. Buchele said that the disease was named tularemia because it was first isolated in Tulare county, Calif., but that it is prevalent throughout the world. Anyone who handles rabbits may contract the disease, and the mortality rate is about 5 per cent, Buchele said. To avoid the tularemia, hunters should only shoot running rabbits because a sick rabbit will usually sit still. When skinning rabbits it is advisable to wear rubber gloves, which should be sterilized after each use. There is little danger from properly cooked meat, Buchele explained.
