PAGE FOUR UNIVERSITY DAILY KANSAN, LAWRENCE, KANSAS JANUARY 29,1946 On the Fenski with MEG WENSKI Charlie Black, K.U.'s All-American forward, shoots more than any other player in the country, said Bruce Drake, Oklahoma U's basketball mentor recently. Being from KU we are inclined to disagree with Bruce Drake. First, he apparently has not read the statistics on all the college ball players in the United States and second, we have the statistics on a lot of Charlie's shooting. In the last game against Oklahoma university, Charlie sank nine field goals in 17 attempts. That gave him a percentage of .529 which is a remarkable feat in basketball, especially when the other team is out to stop him. Mr. Drake continued that if Gerald "Rambler" Tucker, OU's All-Big Six center, shot as much as Black, he would average 50 points a game. We admit that Tucker is a great player and agree that OU should consider themselves lucky for having such a fine Kansas boy returning to their nest. However, 50 points is quite a few points and we doubt if very many will agree with him on his prophecy. Thus far this year in Big Six competition, Black has been hitting near the .350 mark in average percentages. As long as he can keep this up, it is evident that Charlie will be knocking on the door once again for All-American honors. Isn't it jealousy alone which causes squawks? 4. S.A. To Elect Feb.18 Shirley Jean Wills and Lorraine Estella Carpenter are the two candidates for president of the Independent Student association. Election will be held at 7:30 p.m., Feb. 18, in the Kansas room of the Union, Jack Lee Nichols, president said today. Old Rivals Meet Tonight The clash between Kansas and Kansas-State will unfold for the 53rd time here when the Jayhawkers open the closing half of their 1946 basketball season in Hoch auditorium at 7:30 tonight. A ape rally was held in the Union lounge this afternoon as a preliminary to the game and part of Kansas day festivities. The Jayhawkers have a clean record containing 20 victories over the Aggies, and K.U. has never dropped a Big Six game to K-State in Lawrence. Not since 1928 have the Wildcats been able to score a victory over the Jayhawkers. That year, they scored a 20-13 win in Lawrence, then completed a grand slam by taking the game on their home court, 40-30. K-State will face an improved Kansas squad since the 39-26 win the Jayhawkers scored in Manhattan in their second conference game. Gib Stramel, who dropped in 14 points at the first meeting has since reached fifth place scoring position in the Big Six conference with an average of 12.3. "Little George Gear," who caused a lot of raising in football encounters with the K-Staters, took the spotlight this week after tieing the Iowa State game last Friday when the Jayhawkers were losing with a minute remaining to play. With five field goals and two free throws he took individual scoring honors for the first time this season.
