JANUARY 29,1946 UNIVERSITY DAILY KANSAN, LAWRENCE, KANSAS PAGE THREE --can give every victim of Infantile Paralysis—regardless of Age, Race, Creed or Color—the chance to fight for recovery and the hope of GOING HOME AGAIN. SOCIALLY SPEAKING Gecky Vallette, Kansan Society Editor Black coffee, late hours, and no-dose pillos loom up for the rest of this week and next with finals about to begin. Of course, the theory of semester study and sleep during final week is fool proof. But, for some it's too late, and they're counting on a rabbit's foot and a horse shoe to carry them through. Either way you do it, here's wishing you lots of good, good luck! Since this is the semester's last issue, let's toss in a pleasant thought. Eat, sleep, and have a hilarious time during vacation. It it's been such fun being in on all of your dinner guests, pinnings, weddings, and meetings. From a casual gander at trays in the cafeteria line, one could report that many students either do not know what constitutes an adequate diet or are perverted by their purses or food fancies. Growth is not completed in the college-age group. And while it is generally believed that not much energy is expended by students in brain work, it's still true that an average person burns about 1,600 calories just resting in bed. College activities boost this requirement to 2,000-2,400 calories. And football players can use 4,000-5,000 calories. How to Stay Out of the Hospital Except for a few who are definitely allergic to certain foods or who have illnesses that limit food selection, everyone can eat all the foods offered on menus at University eating places. But many cherish peculiar ideas, fostered in childhood by fond parents, or foods they think they can't eat or do not like. Any one can be assured of a fairly adequate diet, without having a knowledge of the actual composition and caloric value of foods, by remembering these basic facts: Essentials in an adequate diet are 1) protein for tissue building and repair; 2) fat and carbohydrate for energy and fuel; 3) minerals for cell structure and normal action; 4) vitamins for protection and growth; and 5) water for digestion, excretion, and temperature regulation. These essentials can be assured by daily selection of one serving each of citrus fruit or tomato juice and another fruit; whole grain cereal (not plain bran); potato, cooked vegetable, and raw vegetable; two servings of meat, poultry, fish, or cheese; a pint to a quart of Grade A pasteurized milk; carbohydrates in desserts twice a day; and six to eight glasses of water, mostly between meals. Ralph I. Canuteson, M.D These foods will cancel the need for vitamin pills for pep or fatal apple for color. Joyce Hartwell Engaged Delta Gamma has announced the engagement of Joyce Hartwell, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Godfrey Hartwell, Wichita, to Fred G. Meyer, son of Mr. and Mrs. A. C. Meyer, St. Louis. Mrs. F. A. Benson, housemother, who made the announcement, received a corsage of pink carnations. Miss Hartwell wore violets and red roses. Assisting in the ceremony were Helen Osborne and Virginia Cochener, whose corages were of carnations. Miss Hartwell is a College sophomore. Meyer is stationed in the Philippines. He was enrolled in the V-12 program in 1945-44. Let's all give generously. A little to you will mean a lot to them.
