PAGE FOUR UNIVERSITY DAILY KANSAN, LAWRENCE, KANSAS MONDAY, MAY 29, 1944 KU Loses 10-4 To Sedalia Team Through Errors The University of Kansas baseball team went down in defeat before the Sedalia army air field, Saturday by the score of 10 to 4. The Jayhawks played their best game of the infant season but the steadier playing of the opponents as the contest wore on proved too much for them. Light showers fell several times during the game but did not prevent the two teams from continuing. Saffel started on the mound for Kansas and pitched an excellent game until the late innings when Scalzo came in from right field to take over. Several times after runners would get on base Saffell either caught them off base or else struck out the batters to pull himself out of the hole. The Sedalia team was held scoreless until the third inning when they pushed across two counters and they scored at least once every inning after that. Although outfit only 9 to 11, the Kansas team left several men on base, never being able to bunch their hits enough to make more than one run in an inning. The Kansans made several bad mistakes but at other times came up with some fine plays. Daleen hit a homer in the ninth but didn't touch third base while rounding the bases and was called out. However, the next man up, Farber, hit a hard drive past the left fielder and completed the circuit standing up. With each contest the Jaykawks make marked improvement, and with a few more games under their belt to give them some needed confidence they should begin to win their share of games. U.S. Court Refuses Negro Draft Petiton Washington, (INS)—The Supreme Court today refused to consider a petition attacking legality of the draft of white and Negroes under separate quotas. The petition of Winfred Lynn, a Negro, contended that calling of white and Negro draftees under separate quotas results in some draftees being called ahead of their turn in violation of law. The department of justice in a brief filed with the court contended that a separate method of drafting is a necessary administrative procedure.
