THURSDAY, MAY 25, 1944 UNIVERSITY DAILY KANSAN, LAWRENCE, KANSAS PAGE THREE YWCA, YMCA Will Give Picnic At Potter Lake on Wednesday The YWCA and YMCA picnic will be held at 5:30 p.m., Wednesday, at Potter Lake, Eugenia Hepworth, social chairman of the YWCA, announced today. "Anyone who is interested in either organization is invited to attend the picnic, which, in addition to the supper, will provide plenty of entertainment in the way of sports and games," she commented. Tickets, which may be obtained from representatives in the various houses and also from the YWCA office in Henley House, must be had by tomorrow, Miss Hepworth said. Housemothers Vote For $50 Scholarship Housemothers of all the organized houses of the University voted $50 for the annual scholarship at their last meeting of the year Monday afternoon in the English room of the Union building, Mrs. Dean Alt, president, announced. This scholarship is made up of contributions from the various housemothers. The person who will receive the award is chosen by the University scholarship committee, she explained. Election of officers was also held at the meeting. Mrs. Alt was re-elected president and Mrs. R. D. Montgomery was elected secretary-treasurer. Plans for next year were discussed and it was decided that the women would continue their Red Cross work. This year 45 wool patchwork quilts which were given to Bundles for Bluejackets, were made, Mrs. Alt stated. Scrapbooks for servicemen and invalids, which will be sent to Winter General hospital, were also made. Throughout the year, the house- mothers have also maintained a booth in Weaver's department store for the sale of war bonds and stamps she added. Potter Lake, in honor of Senator T. M. Potter, was constructed primarily as a reservoir of needed water supply in case of fire. After being graduated in July, she will enter technician's training at the Bell Memorial hospital in Corbin Hall has announced the marriage of Geraldine Speck, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. J. Speck of Nortonville, to Donald Lloyd, son of Mr. and Mrs. D. O. Lloyd, of Emporia, which took place Saturday evening in the parlor of the First Presbyterian church of Emporia. The Rev. Orlo Choguill, pastor, read the double ring ceremony. Dressed in a two-piece suit of ice-blue crepe, the bride wore white accessories and a corsage of gardenias and sweetheart rose buds. Her attendant, Mrs. Edward Slenz, of Kansas City, Mo., wore a dress of light pink with white accessories and a corsage of sweet peas and roses. Jack Leake, accompanied by his mother, Mrs. Beth Leake, sang "Because" and "Ah, Sweet Mystery of Life," preceding the service. Ozark Author Dies In California Clinic The noted author, who started his writing career while a preacher, wrote many widely read novels including "The Shepherd of the Hills" and "The Winning of Barbara Worth," each reaching the million mark sales. Kansas City. Lloyd, who was graduated from the College of Emporia, completed a year in the School of Medicine in 1943. A member of the Navy V-12 program, he belonged to Phi Beta Pi, medical fraternity. He will be stationed at the Bell Memorial hospital in Kansas City. Harold Bell Wright, whose novels brought fame to the Ozarks, died yesterday at the age of 72 in the Scripps Memorial clinic at LaJolla, Calif. He had been ill with bronchial pneumonia.
