PAGE TWO UNIVERSITY DAILY KANSAN. LAWRENCE. KANSAS FRIDAY, MAY 12. 1944 Art Exhibit Has Work Of Kansan The paintings of Grace Bliss Stewart, of New York, are featured in the May art exhibit at Spooner-Thayer museum. Mrs. Stewart was born in Atchison, Kan., and during the past ten years has traveled extensively. She now lives in New York City. Her paintings have been sent on traveling exhibitions by the American Federation of Arts, the Cayuga Museum of Art, and the Dayton Art Institute. In 1937 she was one of twenty artists invited to exhibit at the International Exhibition in Toronto, Canada. Mrs. Stewart has held six New York one-man shows. The New York Times remarked of her paintings, "Poetically treated realism, no mere representation; her painting is individual, even distinguished." The Art News states that "her landscapes are always individually constructed, and the color is both vigorous and reserved." Advertising Expert Will Speak Tuesday George L. Home Ec Department Publishes Bulletins In order to create greater interest in the University home economics department and to secure a list of prospective students, approximately 1,000 illustrated bulletins from the department have been published under the direction of Prof. Edna A. Hill and sent to home economics teachers, principals and superintendents of Kansas schools. The booklet expresses the philosophy of the department, its functions, lists the courses offered and reveals some of the vocational opportunities made available by these courses. Students of the home economics department posed for the photographs which illustrate the work done in the department and the facilities available. Most of the photography was done by the University Photographic bureau. Missouri Wins Controversy Over Land in Supreme Court Washington, (INS)—The supreme court Monday decided in favor of Missouri in a controversy over 2000 acres of land brought into dispute because of wandering tendencies of the Missouri river. The controversy involved land at Forbes Bend which lies between Doniphan county Kansas and Holt county Missouri. Rock Chalk Talk By DIXIE GILLILAND That Certain "Come On" - Marylou Regier, the one they call Rigor, was heading for home at Kappa Alpha Theta when she realized she was being followed at a not-too-far-back-for-efficiency distance by an eligible one from PT-6. Undaunted by the steepness of the hill, Rigor began a stately descent, guaranteed to attract anything within a radius of 50 feet. Half way up, worse came to worst, Turning her ankle, she did a 3- pointer, with books and skirt flying in opposite directions—both wrong. Gallantly Seaman PT-6 picked her up and dusted her off. The victim mumbled feeble thanks. Well, anyway, it worked. Slight Miscalculation—Spring has come with the birds and the bees—and the tadpoles. Dona Burkhead and Ernestine Shears set out Tuesday in search of the pre-frogs. It took more than an hour of careful manipulation before they could return to the Chi Omega house with their properly-aired, correctly-lighted bottle full of the species, bitched only moments before. Somewhere along the line the experts made a slight miscalculation. After consulting all the authorities, the verdict was handed down that the contents of the bottle were not infant tadpoles, but mosquitoes. Chi O sisters assisted in the immediate disposal of the specimens. Life's Little Embarrassments Joan Harris, Sigma Kappa, played hostess recently to an aviation cadet friend from the Olathe base. While visiting at the University, said friend stayed with the Navy fliers at the old Phi Fsi house. 楷 容 静 A big weekend had ended, and the flier had returned home when Jo received an SOS to hustle over to the barracks and rescue a ring left by her guest. Though not too happy over the idea of paying the Navy such a social visit, Jo decided it was "now or never," and started for the Phi Psi house. Sure enough, she guessed it exactly wrong, and as she mounted the steps, she met the entire fleet coming out. Minutes later, with the ring in her possession, Jo returned to find that the air corps had obediently lined up on the sidewalk so she could march directly in front of the squad.
