SUNDAY, MARCH 28, 1943 UNIVERSITY DAILY KANSAN, LAWRENCE, KANSAS PAGE SEVEN We Want a Battleship It's Unanimous The University students want a new battleship. The antiquated battleship, Kansas, now in service with the fleet is definitely too old to merit the name of Kansas, students agreed. Students gave the following answers when asked, "Do you think Kansas should have a new batleship?" Glenn Sewell, Jr., business junior—"We contributed enough scrap in the national scrap drive; I think we definitely should have a new battleship." Lillian Wendler, college freshman—"Sure!" Keown Wants Cruiser J. Donald Keown, college senior — "Well I believe Kansas should have a new battleship, but I do think that Caldwell, my home town, should have a cruiser before too much emphasis is placed on the battleship deal." Bill Spence, fine arts freshman—"Well, you know I'm a Missouri, but I think Kansas should have a battleship. I've been shown that Kansas has the fighting men and women that deserve a fine sleek battleship." John Conard, college senior—“Well, now I'm in V-7, and if I have to command that beat-up tub they call the Kansas, I'll be "i"-,"@ if I'll sail her up the Kaw.” Gibson Wants To Build Dock Dwight Bartlett, college freshman — "I believe that if any state has a new battleship Kansas should have one." Niles Gibson, senior engineer—"My only statement regarding that question is this—I would like to have the Navy hold up building proceedings until I have graduated and given the chance of building the dry dock to house the Kansas." Ann Moorhead, college sophomore—"Yes, I think we should have a new battleship." Paul Adams, college sophomore—"It would be the height of assininity if a new battleship is built and it does not receive the name of Kansas." Sam Cook, college freshman—"A new battleship? You bet!" One Woman's Opinion Washington—It is Mrs. Mildred Scott Olmstead's belief that "it would be better for the war to go on a year longer than to draft women." Wickard Evades Reporters' Query Washington, (INS) — Secretary of Agriculture Claude R. Wickard yesterday declined to give a positive answer as to whether he would resign his post. As Wickard hurried into the White House for the regular Friday cabinet meeting, reporters tried to halt him for questioning. Declaring he was late for the meeting, Wickard kept walking, and a reporter shouted to him, "Mr. Secretary, do you intend to resign your post?" "I don't think so," was Wickard's eply as he entered the cabinet room. CHURCH NOTES First Christian Church 10th and Kentucky Streets Harold G. Barr, Minister 9:30 Sunday school. Faculty Gardens To Round Out Rationed Meals An experiment last year, the faculty victory gardens are almost a necessity now with the recent installation of the point system of food rationing. More than 30 sections have been assigned to the University staff members, according to the victory garden committee which consists of Prof. Guy W. Smith, chairman; Raymond Nichols, executive secretary; and C. G. Bayles, superintendent of buildings and grounds. Twenty-two of the garden plots are at the south end of the campus and east of the intramural fields. There were assigned a week ago and many of them have been started. Ten of the plots are 50 by 60 feet and 12 of them are 40 by 80. The other plots are in West Hills on property owned by Dean F. J. Moreau and Dean Paul B. Lawson. These were staked out by Mr. Smith and Mr. Nichols Friday afternoon and Saturday morning. Some of the gardeners have whole plots of ground while others are just taking half. Many of the faculty members have their own gardens around their homes.
