SUNDAY, MARCH 28, 1943 UNIVERSITY DAILY KANSAN, LAWRENCE, KANSAS PAGE THREE Theta Formal Last Night; Spring Fever Here to Stay Warm weather and spring fever had their effect on weekend dances and picnics. The Theta spring formal led the list with dancing in the Kansas room to the music of the Bachmann-Pope band. Some spring formals were worn. A square dance sponsored by the physical education department was held in Robinson gymnasium. The dancing and entertainment at the Community building for the service men $ ^{\circled{4}} $ ity building for the service men was sponsored by two church organizations. Debaters spent the weekend here, which may have accounted for the more-than-usual cars on the campus, or it might be attributed to the spring fever which seems to have hit all students. Steak frys and picnics are numerous due to the approaching meat rationing, and possibly to the nice weather. ALPHA DELTA PI . . . . . Capt. Kenneth George was a guest this week. . . Students 711 Mass. Norman Taurog is an example. The director has filmed many Hollywood musicals but he never was confronted by a situation like the present one. His new M-G-M musical is "Girl Crazy," starring Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland. In dancing and singing numbers, 50 showgirls were featured. So far, all was easy. But, each girl was to have a partner, and there came the rub. Average age of the girls was 20. Average age of the boys, as they finally lined up, was 16. Taurog dared not use the few boys over 18 still available, for they might be lost in a single day through calls from their draft board. The result is that male dancers seen on the screen for the duration will be, in the main, kids ranging from 14 to 18 years of age. A second result is one big collective headache for directors of the films. Stop In At WIEDEMANN'S For Eating and Dancing Fourteen to eighteen year olds were safe—but they posed conditions never before faced by a Hollywood musical. Each boy who hadn't reached his 18th birthday, or hadn't completed his high school education, had to study four hours a day on the set. That left him just four hours a day to work, because he had to leave the set at 6 o'clock on the nose—no overtime. Boys Are Dancers In Hollywood Now Now, however, the situation is reversed. There are more beautiful girls in the cinema capital than ever before. But it seems like all the male dancers $ ^{ \textcircled{3}} $ are wearing a uniform. mothers Forty-three of the 50 boys fell into this category. According to California state law, each of these had to have a parent, guardian, or sponsor on the set. There were also nine teachers, and as many different classrooms erected in every open space on the stage. Hollywood, (INS)—There's a new problem confronting the makers of film musicals. No. 1 task used to be to find enough prettygirls. Their male partners were plentiful in Hollywood. With 43 boys, almost as many Watch Wiedemann's Window at the Spring Opening Thursday Evening Despite the added difficulties, Taurog wasn't overly dismayed. "These boys are troupers already," he declared. mothers, nine teachers and all the extra paraphernalia, the "Girl Crazy" set took on the appearance of a three-ring circus.
