PAGE TWO UNIVERSITY DAILY KANSAN, LAWRENCE, KANSAS FRIDAY, MARCH 26, 1943 Men Deferred For Land Army Washington, (INS)—President Roosevelt announced today that Chester Lee Davis, the nation's new food czar, will establish a "land army" to produce food needed to insure victory in the war and that 3,000,000 men will be deferred from selective service to farm. Those deferred from service to work on farms will be between 18 and 37, the President said. Of the total to be exempted from military service for planting and harvesting, 400,000 will be single men and 2,600,-000 will be married men with wives, or men with wives and children, the chief executive disclosed. Square Dance To Be Given By Physical Education Department A square dance for all interested students will be sponsored by the physical education department between 8 and 9:30 tomorrow night in Robinson gymnasium, Miss Ruth Hoover, assistant professor of physical education, announced today. There will be half an hour of instruction starting at 8 o'clock, in elementary square dances for beginners. Persons planning to attend may go either alone or with dates. Scientist Says Time Will Limit Inventions Chicago, (ACP)—The world no longer will need the aid of the scientist a dozen centuries hence, Dr. Ralph Linton, a visiting professor of anthropology at the University of Chicago, says, for by that time there will be no more scientific worlds to conquer and science will "know all the answers." "Already there are indications the number of basic inventions is decreasing," Dr. Linton said. "Once we have tapped, for example, all the sources of energy, including atomic energy, there simply won't be any left to tap." Henry Ford Inspects University Naval School Lt. Henry Ford, II, grandson of Henry Ford, motor and industrial magnate, assistant to the District Training Officer of the Ninth Naval District with headquarters at Great Lakes, Ill., has been in Lawrence yesterday and today for a routine inspection of the naval school for machinist's mates at the University of Kansas. He has also been in conference with Commanding Officer Lt. Arthur H. Buhl, and University officials. Ford is commissioned as a Lieutenant, (j.g.) in the Navy. Fifth WAAC Center To Open Washington, (OWI)Plans for the opening of a fifth WAAC training center has been announced by the War Department. The new center will have headquarters and one section at Ruston, La. The other two sections will be located at Camp Polk, La., and Monticello, Ark. A large part of the administrative specialist training, now being given at Fort Des Moines, will be transferred to this center. That appeal went out to Cincinnatians from J. F. Heusser, zoo executive director, who feared that "Susie," denied her Director Heusser's appeal followed an unfavorable ruling on "Susie's" breakfast of peaches from the OPA regional office in Cleveland. OPA Won't Or Can't Help "Susie," who has eaten peaches every morning since infancy, consumes about 600 ration points monthly under wartime conditions. Her keepers said that meat rationing doesn't bother "Susie" because she never touches it. Director Heusser said that only home canned peaches would be accepted in excess of human needs because of the rationing. Fine Arts Student Has Brother Playing With Dodger Team Charles George Fultz, Osawatomie, early this month, signed a contract with the Brooklyn Dodgers. Fultz, who was on the Stanford basketball team, first played professional baseball with Topeka, and was bought from Topeka by the Dodgers, several times contender for the world championship baseball pennant. Fultz's sister, Margaret, is a senior in fine arts here at the University of Kansas.
