PAGE FOUR UNIVERSITY DAILY KANSAN, LAWRENCE, KANSAS THURSDAY, MARCH 25, 1943 --- Jayhawk abberwock By Matt Heuertz "PHOG" WRITES ARTICLE In the February issue of the Athletic Journal is an article, "Rapid Rolling Offensive Triangle Merging a Set and a Moving Screen," by Dr. Forrest C. Allen, University basketball coach. The title of the Kansas offensive signifies an offensive roll or grapevine down the floor with the men passing at angles and running in curves, interspersing a pivot only when the offensive man is confronted with a defensive opponent. BASKETBALL RULES The axioms of the Kansas offensive are: 1. Never dribble when you can pass. 2. Never pivot unless forced to do so. 3. Never make a long pass unless a team mate is at least ten feet in the open. 4. Never dribble closer than six feet to the side line and then cut in toward the center of the court as soon as possible. ** ** ** DRIEBLE AND BROKEN-FIELD RUN Dr. Allen simulates the dribble to the broken-field run in football. Both are individual plays, consequently, in basketball passing should be resorted to, whenever possible. Passing and cutting are encouraged more in the passing game than they are in the dribbling game. In the passing game the opponents are faced with many more passing angles to overcome than in the dribbling game. Kansas teams are taught two dribbles, a low dribble for security and a high dribble for speed when there is no opponent between the dribbler and the basket. Fast-breaks are used by Kansas teams only when the opponents are outnumbered; it is never used when the defensive opponents equal the offensive threat. $$ $$ THE KANSAS DEFENSE While on the defense, "Phog's" players use what he calls a stratified transitional man-for-man defense with a zone principle. It is a strata of man for man and a strata of zone, and there is a transition from one to the other depending upon the play situation. Kansas men play their opponents man-for-man until a screen by the opponents is attempted. It is then that the Kansas men switch opponents. This kind of a defense permits the Kansas teams to perform equally well against the many types of offensives used throughout the country by different teams. It is the answer to the question of why Kansas teams can do a good job on successive nights against opponents who employ different kinds of offenses. The Geological Survey has been investigating these clays for several years to determine the aluminium content and their suitability for making ceramic ware, pottery, and refractories.
