TUESDAY, MARCH 23, 1943 UNIVERSITY DAILY KANSAN, LAWRENCE, KANSAS PAGE THREE Jay Janes Held Banquet; Midweek Tomorrow Night The annual formal banquet of the Jay Janes was held last night in the Kansas Room of the Memorial Union to elect new officers and initiate members. Margaret Butler was elected president for the coming year and Caroline Baker, vice-president. The honor initiate is Ruth Kelley, whose name will be engraved on a gold bar and hung under the Phi Sigma Chi plaque. Runners-up Alice Goff. $ ^{6}$ Florence Harris, and Mary Martha Hudelson received corsays as well as Miss Kelley. Looking ahead now, the seventh mid-week this year will be held in the Memorial Union lounge tomorrow night, and those attending will dance to the music of the Bachmann-Pope band. Mid-weeks seem to draw larger crowds than other dances, proving the popularity of entertainment in the middle of the week. This may be due to the absence of a great many students over each weekend. Tomorrow night there doesn't seem to be any rival swimming meet or fire, so the at- wrining feet or like to be use a adduct is expected to be large. Equitation classes, now exclusively female, are run to teach endurance and skill as well as for enjoyment. The two day trip to Topeka last fall demonstrated that the coeds could take a hard riding trip complete with bad weather rain and sleet. This spring $ ^{ \textcircled{1}} $ picnics on horseback have been given and more are planned for the future. Then the advanced classes are learning to ride army style—even to the exercises on horseback. Horses have been drafted on both coasts for patrol work. According to Gayle Mott, head of the University equitation program, work in defense and patrolling will soon be started. Rough cross country rides toughen coeds, and soon there will be riding through fire so as to show the women what to do if they come across a fire when on civilian patrol. Many find equitation, fun and spend extra time on horseback. Riders wear slacks, blue jeans, or anything that is comfortable. They learn to feel at home on a horse and ride for the enjoyment—trying tricks and imitating the riders in western movies. Sleigh rides in winter and hay rides in fall and spring not only are loads of fun—they teach women how to direct and drive teams which may come in useful sometime. KU has gone to war in recreation as well as in studies. Combining pleasure with work, women are becoming more fit and liking it.
