Wooden ROTC Uses Ersatz Guns The wooden drill rifles made their debut last week when the University ROTC used them for the first time for regimental drill. "The rifles can deceive the best of them," said Lt. Col. Jack Gage, director of marksmanship, as he described their realistic appearance. Since rifles are the most important single weapon in the war, a substitute had to be adopted for ROTC units. The rifle is modeled after the old style '03 but it is the same size as an M-1, or the new Garand semi-automatic rifle. Of the several metal parts the bolt is the only one that moves. The rifle can be carried or held steady while "firing" by the leather or canvas slings. There is a metal sight cover on the wooden barrel, a stacking, swivel, metal trigger guard, and a painted upper-swivel. The rifle weighs less than four pounds.
