SUNDAY, MARCH 21, 1943 UNIVERSITY DAILY KANSAN, LAWRENCE, KANSAS PAGE THREE Hobnail Hop Heads Weekend; Dorothy Chapin Chosen Queen Saturday always highlights the weekend, either by a mass exodus or influx of students, service men, and guests. Perhaps choosing the queen of the engineers last night at the Hobnail Hop kept many here. Dorothy Lee Chapin, of Medicine Lodge and member of Gamma Phi Beta, was the lucky winner. Last night the two informal lounge were fortunate to have' bands. The Hobnail Hop got the Bachmann-Pope band while the Inter-fraternity Council dance had Matt Betton of Manhattan and his orchestra. Many sailors embarked on their journey to Kansas City pushing elbows with the crowd of students also on the way to the big city. Those sailors who remained in Lawrence were entertained at a dance by the Community Service League. University women who are junior hostesses helped to entertain the sailors. Many women students who have lost their steady dates to the army went to Ft. Leavenworth Friday and Saturday to bring a little K.U. spirit to the poor boys. (I think they are happier than the forlorn dateless girls). The weekend nights see many girls now going in bodies to the shows—looking a bit sheepish but not too unhappy. Nowadays the mail box is really more important than the telephone. Son Born To Ewings, Former Students Rush for Easter Clothes Spring Is Here A son, weighing 8 pounds 10 ounces, was born to Mrs. Allen Ewing Wednesday afternoon at Lawrence Memorial hospital. Mrs. Ewing is the former Betty Jean Abels of Lawrence who was graduated from the University in 1942. Last year she was society editor of the Kansan. The baby's father has been receiving army training in Ft. Benning, Georgia, and arrived in Lawrence today. He expected to receive his commission yesterday. Ewing is also a former student and a member of Delta Tau Delta. Spring is here, and women will think of clothes and of using their first coupon for necessary Easter shoes. One minister always welcomes his large Easter audience by wishing them Merry Christmas since he doesn't expect them back before the next Easter. Many believe the huge attendance of church on Easter can be attributed largely to the desire of women to show off new Spring clothes. Though Spring is the time for the rush to stores, the clothes rationing scare has sort of taken its place. But the nice weather incites women to run down and buy at least a hat—some frilly straw one to contrast the many copies of service men's hats. Spring—please hurry, and come to stay.
